Is there a wireless hot spot near FW?

I understand that you can pay to have internet access from your campsite while at FW but is anyone aware of a wireless hot spot nearby that we could use with our laptop. We don't need access everyday; just need to check up on a couple of things every once in a while. Maybe a Starbucks, Atlanta Bread Co., etc. etc.

We leave tomorrow so any quick replies would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I believe the Contemporary has WiFi access in the lobby. It is not free. There is a fee.

Ft. Wilderness has cable modems available in the preferred sites that have cable service.

There are also phone jacks at the reception outpost for good old fashioned dial up service.

For my last trip I brought a Verizon Air Card from work. It is broadband cell phone service.

If you don't mind using their computers you can use the Business Center at the Contemporary. They're supposed to charge you per 15 minutes of usage but I've used it at least 10 times and have yet to be charged. Just be nice to the clerks and don't overstay your welcome. I'm usually in and out of there in 15 or 20 minutes.

We have used the Business Center at the Contemporary over a dozen times, for 15 minutes increments and have always been charged. You were lucky.

I was sitting in the 700 loop playing with my laptop, and checked avail wifi connections just for fun ... up popped several. One said "Yogie's Jellystone Rv park", and had a free log on button. Thought I was in a time warp or something ...

I tried the free log on button, and it worked, but I felt I was stealing bandwidth, so I logged off. The other two were WEP encripted, must have been campers with sat units and wireless routers in there campers.

You might just scan and see what you can find, but it is a crime to log onto a wireless network without permission. Maybe you can find Yogi again, or hook up with someone with a Datastorm and buy them a six pack.

You could try going over to Kissimmee. The downtown area is supposedly covered by free wifi. Here is the link to the map (look for "wireless map" on the left hand side of the page.). http://wireless.kua.net/

Not in NYS..I was told not in any state. Can you give me more info on this being against the law in Florida?

I read a story awhile back about the first prosocution of a person that was using his neighbors wifi without permission. I assume this is an FCC issue, not a local state issure, similar to intercepting cell phone and sattelite signals.

A public hotspot that advertises it's service as free is a different deal I think.

We have a house in Fl, and our neighbors grandson was using our network (used his own name for log in ...). Another neighbor (a retired lawyer) told me this was illegal, but we did not discuss at length, and he did not claim to be an expert.

I would not try it, since they have your mac address in the router log, but I don't see how they would ever find you.

I will go with 'illegal' untill I get a definative opinion ... not sure from who.

There was a case in NYS this past summer (which was a first according to the article, if that is the one you are talking about), however, the case was dropped, because according to the story, it was not illegal. They ran the story to talk about the moral implications. I wish I had saved the article that was sent to me, but I didn't. If I was convinced it was illegal, I could prob get a back story from our newspaper, but I'm not..the conversation has been discussed too much on other boards, and so far no one has been able to point to something concrete other than he says, she says, that it is illegal.
I won't go with illegal, until someone shows me something that proves it is. We camp with a policeman, and I did talk with him when the case was printed up, but I realize he's not a prosecutor, so maybe he wasn't aware of a new law. I know once the case was dropped, I assumed he was correct. Our city plans to soon make our whole downtown accesible at no charge, so that will make our downtown a friendly place for people with laptops. I know it's a real plus for us, when we camp, to find a campground with free wifi. We've had other campers with sattelite offer us their number to put in our computer to use, which has also been great.
This was on one of the other boards..and I have a few other urls that talk about this..I think there was a case in FL, but I believe that one too was dropped..if you can find the end of the case, I'd be interested:

I have been thru this on several different venues. Had a scanner that could pick up cell phone signals. Next thing you know, it was illegal to manufacture or sell scanners that could pick up cell phone signals. The signal is right there, but you can't tune to it.

Before that, when they started 'scrambling' sattelite signals, those of us with those big dishes had to start paying a subscription fee to watch HBO, etc. Just 'cause the signal was there didn't mean you could tune it in legally.

I see this with wifi soon, I will bet. Theft of services would be my take. Doesn't seem fair to pay and have someone close just use your connection. Like watching TV thru someone's window kinda.

You were correct in questioning my statement, however ... I should have included "I think".

Well heck, my neighbors have such a large TV, we could watch it. I just can't get them to turn up the volume high enough though.

Being a video voyeur hasn't been illegal that long, and I really think it will be awhile before the wifi issue will be addressed clearly. As it is, so many campgrounds and downtown areas leave theirs open for anyone to use, it's going to be hard to determine just who did. Since you can easily make it so no one can use it, I really wonder if it will become a law that can stand the time of a courtroom.
