I posted this question on another thread and it got looked over.

I'd like my oldest son to read a book on this subject. He's almost 10 and he asks me many questions.

I did get a book from the library but it was copyrighted from the 60's!!!!!! Talked about sanitary belts and it was from the 60's style of presentation. It was the library's only book. Yet so many current books for girls.

Any suggestions?

tHANKS. I've never ordered anything from Amazon so I naturally don't think of them.

I like the series "God's Design for Sex"

Obviously, they have a Christain theme to them. I think there are 4 books in the series and they get progressively more in detail.

Let the library know about this situation; they may not have realized that this gap exists in their collection. I will tell you, however, that materials of this kind are among the most frequently stolen materials in a public library's collection; right after the auto repair manuals!

I love the book and companion VHS of "What's Happening To Me?" One of the authors is Peter Mayles - can't recall the other at the moment. Have used it with DSS as well as DS now 14 - once two summers ago had 4 kids watching the cartoon video in my living room. It's for both genders, very light-hearted, but factual, and good viewing for parents, too. This has been out probably 20 years now - I'm thinking 1986. But sure beats 1960!!!

I have also used in in the clinical setting with families of all ages to facilitate communication and education in families where the talking doesn't come so easy.(And when it comes to this topic - NONE of us find it too easy!)

There's a version for younger kids called "Where Did I Come From?" The cartoon sperm-guy dancing around in a tux with a rose in his mouth is too funny!!!

Good luck!!!

Try these tittles

My Body, My Self for Boys by Lynda abd Area Madaras.
and
It's Perfectly Normal by Robie Harris

I read them both before showing either to my son - The 2nd book goes into a little more detail on both girls and boys that our son is ready for, so we are saving it. But the first one is a boys only and it is written at a level he can understand (my son is 11)

Hope that helps!

:sunny: And if youre looking for something with a neutral tone, more scientific-looking, try the Dorling-Kindersly Human Anatomy book. It is written for late elementary school and the pictures are really wonderful. Lots of pictures with short paragraphs for explanation. My oldest son took to this like a starving person. The science fascinated him and it was easy to talk to him about "body stuff" because it was just so interesting and non-sexual. Of course, it gave rise to some pretty good questions and opened the door for me to give some information that he didn't ask, but needed to know.

Just be forewarned--DK is explicit. If you don't want him to see drawings of real breasts and genitals(and livers & kidneys & brains), this isn't the book for you. It's not a "how-to" book and it doesn't subscribe to any religious philosophy. They don't couch their functions in ephemisms--parts are called what they're called and function is explained matter-of-factly. There is mention on one page about ways of contraception, including abortion--we just skipped it. I told DS that when he got older we would talk about that, but at 10 I didn't think it was important. (Incidentally, we have had very explicit talks with our son since then. He's 20 now and really needs to know how to take care of himself and any potential girlfriend. And he sure doesn't need a baby! :scared: )

Changing Bodies, Changing Selves is a good one too.
