Okay - I'll put myself out there
I was one of those horrible parents who let her daughter take her Heely's to WDW. In fact - EEEK - I actually bought her the Heely's specifically for our trip to WDW. We bought them 3 months early, after months and months of her begging, and we practiced a lot. By the time we went to WDW she knew MY RULES which included being respectful of the people around you. She wore her Heely's for the entire week without incident. She never "zipped around" like some do, but rather when in an open area (like on the way to to the bus stop) she would casually roll along no quicker than we were walking. She was very respectful of the people around her, she never bumped anyone one, fell, got hurt, etc...This was in April of 2006. During the trip no one made any negative comments about her Heely's although - many did make positive comments.
Prior to our Feb 2007 trip I read that Heely's were not allowed - first at AK and then through WDW.
When we left for our trip in Feb 2007 the Heely's stayed at home.
I personally had no problem with her wearing her Heely's and I think that it is up to the parent's to make sure that thier children are behaving no matter what is on thier feet. I've been run into and almost run over by kids pushing strollers, kids running and kids in Heely's. To me the Heely's are not the problem. Having said that - I completely without question understand the liablity issues around them and I too have seen some kids in them fly by and thought geez - if they fell they would really, really get hurt.
The bottom line for us was simple - the rule was no Heely's so we took no Heely's. I believe that it is important to teach my kids that they have to abide by the rules no matter what.
