Is there a Policy on Heely's in WDW???

Okay - I'll put myself out there :upsidedow

I was one of those horrible parents who let her daughter take her Heely's to WDW. In fact - EEEK - I actually bought her the Heely's specifically for our trip to WDW. We bought them 3 months early, after months and months of her begging, and we practiced a lot. By the time we went to WDW she knew MY RULES which included being respectful of the people around you. She wore her Heely's for the entire week without incident. She never "zipped around" like some do, but rather when in an open area (like on the way to to the bus stop) she would casually roll along no quicker than we were walking. She was very respectful of the people around her, she never bumped anyone one, fell, got hurt, etc...This was in April of 2006. During the trip no one made any negative comments about her Heely's although - many did make positive comments.

Prior to our Feb 2007 trip I read that Heely's were not allowed - first at AK and then through WDW.
When we left for our trip in Feb 2007 the Heely's stayed at home.

I personally had no problem with her wearing her Heely's and I think that it is up to the parent's to make sure that thier children are behaving no matter what is on thier feet. I've been run into and almost run over by kids pushing strollers, kids running and kids in Heely's. To me the Heely's are not the problem. Having said that - I completely without question understand the liablity issues around them and I too have seen some kids in them fly by and thought geez - if they fell they would really, really get hurt.

The bottom line for us was simple - the rule was no Heely's so we took no Heely's. I believe that it is important to teach my kids that they have to abide by the rules no matter what. :)

Good point, AmyGirl - problem is not the footwear. The problem is the parenting - or lack of it.

Leave bad parents at home! :)

Family member is a cast memeber - general manager and HAS pulled passes from those who have been warned about heely's. They are NOT allowed in the parks, resorts, etc.

I feel they should only be allowed at home, in parks, but not in public stores, etc.

i am not saying whether heelys themselves are bad or not - my point is disney EXPLICITLY says not to wear them. they are not allowed. end of story. if you let your kids wear them in the park, then what are you teaching them? that the rules don't apply to them? that is not a good lesson. (this is my opinion and not meant to be an attack on anyone)

Thank you for posting this information!
DH and I were just talking about this this morning.

We are in FROR (BWV) :hourglass Keeping fingers crossed.pixiedust:

DD(10) wants a pair and I thought that this would be great for any future WDW vacations but I will have to break the news to her.

The only problem I forsee is that when we get there she will see others on them and I will have to feel the:furious: heat of "all the other kids are doing it, why can't I???? You said they were against the rules...etc"
I hate being the mean mom.::cop:

Just wanted to add that I really appreciate this board. Ya'll have been such a great source of information.:thumbsup2
I love the cute sign offs/icons. How do ya'll find them? I guess I will just have to keep reading. Are you allowed to "borrow" from others?

This past August I saw them in all 4 parks being used by many children. They would skate right past CMs who did nothing about it.

On a positive note, these children did NOT bother me or my family.

Well you can ask my SIL about how "fun" Heelys are. On May 23, she and my 5 year old niece were walking through the mall when an 11 year old boy on Heelys ran over my niece, knocked her down and broke her arm and elbow in two places. She had surgery on the 25th to put a pin in her arm and spent the next 8 weeks in a cast. We all take a family trip to the beach every year in June and they could not go because of her arm. Also, my niece loves to swim and also couldn't do that all summer. So it was a super "fun" summer for my niece and her entire family because of the boy in the Heelys. I am sure that he had a "fun" summer, as he wasn't the one in a cast all summer. By the way he was with his mother in the mall when the accident happened and the mother was very apologetic and said "he's had Heelys for at least the last two years and has never had an accident." Yes, it was an accident, and yes I am sure that the boy and the mother were sorry, but if the boy had not been wearing the Heelys in the mall, my niece would not have gotten a broken arm and the subsequent surgery. By the way, she is still in a brace which she will be wearing on our upcoming family Magical Gatherings trip to WDW. Hope you all have "fun" on your next trip too.

What part of NOT ALLOWED don't you people get? No where does it say unless it is YOUR child, or unless they know how to use them, or can control them etc. there are over 50K accidents a year on the things. Two weeks ago on the new the Medical community was out saying IF you let a child use these at all the must have full gear, knee and elbo, and writst pads and helmets. So how many like that have you seen at Disney?
Honestly people the RULES DO APPLY TO YOU TOO.

Second to ECV.
It will be OK until an opinion is rendered.

Second opinion coming up.
I hate the things and i can't see the need for them in a theme park.If you are on your feet all day in them they must become uncomfortable and at times dangerous.

I would NEVER let my children wear these at WDW or any public place for that matter. The CMs need to crack down on the rude children and the parents who let them wear them. They are just an accident waiting to happen.

Hold on we're in for a bumpy ride!

I disagree, i mean seriously, let your children have some fun. ONLY let your children wear them if they know how to control them. Some parents let their children wear them and they don't even know how to ride. It is only an accident waiting to happen if the children didn't know how to ride. What's the point of wearing Heely's if they can't wear them in any public place? That's basically, saying, I bought these for no reason.
I let my child wear them in Target, and other stores. If they aren't prohibited, then let them wear them.

If my child ever hurts anyone else while wearing heely's while in a public place, I will be 100% responsible for any harm done and pay for any expenses incurred. If my child breaks anything while in public wearing heely's I will pay for said item. If my child does harm to themselves while being in a public place, I would never think of sueing or blaming said public place for putting that counter there, or that glass shelf there. If my child is being disruptive with the heely's or if anyone says anything about them I will make my child take them off or calm down. If my child doesnt comply, I will whip their *** for not listening to me.

Rules are rules. Who cares whether heely's are a great product or not.

Some CM's will enforce the Heely rule. I'm one of them.

If you ride my bus and your child rolls up and down the aisle, You get one warning. If you don't take action then you are not welcome on my bus and will have security waiting for you. It's a safety hazard, plain and simple.

I'm not out to ruin your vacation, I'm out to make sure that ALL guest have an enjoyable vacation.

Other CM's don't because they don't want the confrontation with a guest who will argue, etc.

When your child hurts themself or others because of those shoes, Will YOU take responsibility for their actions??

that's not how you get people fired up here try this:

I hate lazy people who wear heely's while driving there unsafe ECV while cutting in line! They are the same people that make multiple ADRs with different names so they will have a choice of places to eat at and in the process lock out all the other hard working people who now can't find one place to eat in all of WDW. And another thing, Mr Toad was boring and I liked the wand! I am very upset it has been removed, what was Disney thinking?

You could also throw in something about people who wait over an hour for the parade only to have somebody stand right in front of them minutes before it starts.
