Is there a condolences thread when you have to sell your DVC :(

We had to sell back in April...and it was a very difficult decision. I had to stop going on the DIS for a while to try to curb our desire to seeing the mouse...but to no avail, we're trying to plan a December and a May trip. We're now looking to get back in...although we'll start by buying resale, small point contracts, rather than the large contracts we had earlilier. We had 910 points...and built up too fast. Won't make that mistake again! Needless to say, DVC spoiled us rotten! Also, missed conversing with all of the friends here on the DIS!

Did you have to sell all 910 points, or did you keep some of them?

Glad to have you back and even if you had to sell, your knowledge is still valuable, hope you stay around.

you too, Photobob. :thumbsup2

My husband and I sold our points at the BCV(50pts) and VWL(175pts) a few years back due to financial issues after a death in the family.
We just had our form notarized today and the new contract papers are with Fed Ex Express as we speak to re-join. This time I am joining with a much smaller contract(50pts VWL) so I can afford the dues even if we have another family crisis. We both know we can can always do an add on later if it works out financially.
We are actually renting points for 3 upcoming trips-2 short and one longer.
I hope everything works out for you.

Hello...we ended up giving it all back, and right now my wife and i are kicking ourselves. We should have kept the 60 pt contract with BCV. When we can join again, we want to start with a small contract. Only way we can though is buying resale...gonna take a while to get the funds together.

We haven't had to sell, but a few years ago we thought it would be impossible to own DVC. I would look longingly at the kiosks in the parks and positively drooled when AKV was announced. I didn't know enough about resales and our financial situation was just okay at the time. Fast forward to last summer, and we got a 50-point resale at Vero complete with banked points. It was relatively easy for us to afford out of pocket, and we have since been able to add on. I'm sure there will be a way for you as well to get back into DVC when things are better.

And like others have said, this is a good time to be a non-DVC member too. If you can still afford your Disney trips, you have lots of discounts you can take advantage of.

I have also debated doing the same thing. We sold our RV and I had to decide whether to pay off the car and get rid of the outrageous car payment or pay off the DVC. I opted for the car. But if things don't get better by the end of the year we may have to do the same thing :(

Thanks Sammie. I have filled out my paper work and signed them but they still sit on my desk. I just can't seem to be able to make myself send them.

I am in the exact same boat. I have had the papers sitting on my desk now for a week and just haven't been able to make myself sign them yet, I feel your pain. I have some other reasons for selling too but the primary reason is that it just makes the most financial sense to do so at this time. It is not a life or death thing with us either, but it will help us get our finances more stable. It is really our only extravagance so it makes sense to make the cut there. Maybe I'll sign the papers tomorrow, then I can start procrastinating about faxing them!

Oh no!! I will miss your fantastic photo's and trip reports!! Good luck and you'll
be missed.

My family and I are having to sell our DVC contract to pay down some debts. It's not a life or death thing, but it just makes more financial sense.

So, I was wondering if there were any families out there that sold their DVC at one point only to buy back in at a later date? :confused3

I'd like to hold out some hope for future DVC stays :)

It's not an easy decision to make and I'm sorry you have to make it. Do you have enough points where you could just sell some and keep enough for say a week stay?

We sold SSR just to buy back in about a year later. My job was in trouble and we were getting rid of items so we could bank money. A year later we bought into BLT. We didn't have a hard time selling it so we knew if we were in a bind again we could sell it. Disney bought it back when it went to ROFR.
We have owned @ BLT since March.

We sold both our contracts. One was paid for, the other on credit. I haven't logged on for a while, and just thought I would check in to look at prices at TTS. Well, even after closing costs we could buy back in way cheaper than we sold out. And we needed the money and we haven't had to pay dues, so I guess we're okay with it. In fact, our kids were actually tired of going to Disney they had been so much!

We planned to buy back in when we sold and we will. I love BWV and think the only resort that might compare is the BLT. But that said, we are giving serious thought to Vero Beach. It's really cheap, it's really nice, and I'd love to stay in a beach house there, which is generally only possible to owners.

I guess my rambling point is that you can re-buy your contract. If the economy is lousy, you can buy it for less. If the economy is booming, you may have to pay more. It won't hurt you to take a rest.

I have five small 50-point contracts (2-AKV, 2-BCV, 1-BLT) and one larger one at AKV. I have thought about selling the larger AKV contract and keeping the smaller ones. I just bought a new car and will now have car payments, so things are going to be tight. I'm going to try to wait it out and see if I can get through the next year. If not, my 160 AKV contract will be going up for sale. Then when things improve, I can always add on a couple of small resales.

I wish we were allowed to break up larger contracts into smaller ones without having to sell and re-purchase. Oh well.... :rolleyes1

Wow, I hadn't checked back here for a little while.

The sale went through and we are no longer DVC owners

It was a tough decision, but had to be made. We'll be looking at possibly renting points for our next trip or renting at a moderate resort. But, we'll see how it works out.

Thanks for all of the kind words and glad that I see some others that have had the same situation and have bought back in! Gives me hope! :thumbsup2

My condolences. DVC is a luxury purchase though, and as such in hard times, hard decisions need to be made. Many are tightening their belts these days. When things pick up again for you, you can get back in the game-and with a little more experience.

Wanted to throw out there that maybe consider renting the points. I know the OP has already sold, but for others, renting them out thru Dave was very easy. He pays $10 a point. So if you have 400 pts (and you can borrow points to rent) that's $4000. (1/2 up front, 1/2 when they check in) You get to keep the contract and get some cash. :)

I'm sorry to hear that. I wanted to let you know that your not alone. A couple of years ago, I became a member and bought into AKV. Life happens and I had to give up my DVC membership because it was a 100% expensive, luxury purchase. I was very, very upset. I'm a huge Disney fan and DVC made me feel very special. But I got over it, honestly. Not having a 300+ dollar per/month payment helped. I'm sure, before you know it, you'll be a DVC member soon enough. I know I will be.

I definitely want to purchase again by the end of this year (my goal). I want a very small resale contract (25-50 points) that I can pay cash. Then add on in the far future. I want just enough to go 3 or 4 nights a year during value season. Then stay at Pop in between. Hopefully, as long as nothing comes up in the next 4 months, I'll be a DVC member again.

Sorry I know it is a tough decision. I still haven't put mine on the market, I signed the papers and never sent them in. Things are improving and I am going to try and wait it out, it is still up in the air. I'm hopeful we'll be able to keep it, but will sell if I need to.

Buy back through a re-sale is my advice. There are a lot better deals out there if you have patience.

Even if you don't buy back in you will still be @ Disney but now you don't have dues!:)
