Is the West Mouse House the Best Mouse House? New 2/22 - The End!!!

You poor guys! My brother and SIL were there during "monsoon week" on their Honeymoon (it was her first trip) and they were very disappointed!

Great update...sorry you weren't too impressed with NR! I felt the same way about the pictures in Victoria and Alberts on our honeymoon...lol!

Can't wait to hear more!

OMG - that would have been horrible to have that weather for your honeymoon! We are lucky that we have been able to go to WDW a number of times, so I kept thinking about those folks there at the time for which this was their one and only trip that they had saved for/planned for/etc. How awful!

NR wasn't BAD, just wasn't as good as we had hoped it would be and we expected it to be. The burnt end of my fish was really bad!
It was strange because one of our later meals at a DLR hotel basically had all the same sides and was better entree-wise. We thought it was strange that this "signature" place (NR) would have the exact same stuff as the other place which BTW, was way a good deal cheaper (for a better meal).

11/3/09

We were up early this morning for our Magic Morning. We were going to try to do as much of FL as possible and hopefully some other slow-loaders like Nemo Subs (again), Astro Orbiters, and the Autopia.

If you recall a little tidbit from earlier, I mentioned that we had decided to add a park day to our tickets so that we could see HalloWishes and F!, however by the time we had decided to do this, it was too late to do so over the phone and so we had to add the day at the Disney Travel Co. in DTD. Well, we had forgotten to do so on our other days and this day was our last chance, or we weren't going to have a ticket left for the next day. So we reminded each other that this had to get done today.

The prior 2 days, we had been greeted by this at DL entrance:
4277847258_2768a26303.jpg

and these decorations in the park:
4277102977_b5b64482c4_b.jpg

So imagine our surprise when overnight we were met with this:
4267270920_2406302939.jpg

4266525807_defa4caa16_b.jpg

Now I love Christmastime, but the quick transition from Halloween to Christmas at stores and such makes me crazy. Mostly it starts to stress me out as I starting thinking about all that needs to be done for Christmas which I haven't even thought about by that time. So, I was not thrilled with the quick change in DL - I thought, "Does no one celebrate Thanksgiving anymore???":confused3

Anyways, since there were few people in the park, I finally got an unobstructed picture of this:
4266523037_d2b5a2fa09_b.jpg

We quickly made our way through FL, although the one sticky spot was Peter Pan. The line for this one was well outside of the queue and so we skipped it for the time being. We really liked the Alice in Wonderland ride (although were a bit worried that the raised part would collapse under our combined weight in the car - it doesn't look too strong!) and how the Tea Cups are outside.

4266509275_aeddf5dc8e.jpg

About to head up with Dumbo

IASW was closed for the holiday installation, so were the Story Book Canals and Train - I was so disappointed about IASW because again, I just think it is so neat how it starts outside and in general, we just really wanted to ride it at DLR because who knows if we will ever be back?

We made our way out of FL and waited in line for Autotopia. There was a long line for this but they finally opened the second side while we were waiting. There were just stacks of the little drivers licenses laying around on the ground so we grabbed some for the boys. After this we decided to ride the monorail. Our DS5's favorite WDW ride is the monorail. We rode it to DTD and back and then headed to SM.

Now, SM had been closed the day before to take down the Ghost overlay. I mentioned how I'm a chicken right??? Well, I thought this would be my big first ride ever on SM. We decided to go to the restrooms and headed to the ones near the SM exit. I was waiting for Ralph and looking at the ride pictures and saw one with a woman looking just terrified. Then another woman came out and looked so ill. With that, I just couldn't do it. I was so afraid of big hills and not knowing that they were coming in the dark. I totally chickened out! But I was brave enough for this:

4266510609_2eaa2c51f0_b.jpg

;)

It's really too bad that AstroOrbiters here is on the ground. Being up on the building at WDW really adds something.

We watched Honey I Shrunk... which we had been avoiding in WDW thinking that it would be scary for the boys, but it really wasn't scary at all - I don't know what we had been thinking. We totally forgot that the floor moves.

We looped around back to FL and finally found Peter Pan to have a reasonable line and so rode that. Then I set out on my search for the entrance to Sleeping Beauty's castle.

4267266878_f9cb1af4cf.jpg

Me heading up the steps into the castle

I loved :love:the dioramas and other fun stuff in the castle! I so wish WDW had this in Cinderella's castle (well, with Cinderella's story of course). I cannot tell you how many times I went through the castle that day and the next! This was one of my favorite things at DLR!

Soon it was lunchtime and we had reservations at the Blue Bayou. We had read a number of recent bad reviews about this place on the DIS, but in the end, it just seemed like one of those things to do in DLR if you may never be back. I thought it was a nice atmosphere. Our server was very interesting. She was this incredibly sweet, motherly like lady (but not very old) with an incredibly soothing voice. She gave us very good service, but we overheard the man at the next table (he had been there with his wife and pre-teen son) telling her that she was absolutely the very best waitress they had ever had in their lives, that this was the best service they had ever had. I think he left her a doozy of a tip!

4266511855_e2aa8f98ee_m.jpg

I had the gumbo - very good with a bit of a kick...

4267261072_64439538dc.jpg

...and the Monte Cristo. This was very good but way too much food. I took at least half back to the room and we had it for breakfast the next day, cold Monte Cristo is not too good. Note the broccoli here again - don't get me wrong, I LOVE broccoli and I know it is a staple crop in CA, but it just seemed odd that "seasonal vegetable" all week was broccoli at every DLR TS we went to!

4267259722_77a64d4dcf_b.jpg

Ralph had the Cajun salad - he really liked this but said he could have done with less dressing...

4266515921_a9bf8113b1.jpg

...and the jambalya. He said this was a bit spicy but he ate it all.

We went back to the room to put the Monte Cristo leftovers in the fridge and then decided to head to DCA to check out the Animation building and use our priority seats at the Animation Academy. There were only like 15 people in our drawing class so the priority seating was really not necessary, but I ended up picking the character we were going to draw (my favorite, Pluto). We finished our drawings and wandered through the rest of the building. We did the thing were you answer questions and the computer tells you what Disney character you are most like. Ralphie was Hades:rotfl: and I was Mulan, who happens to be my favorite female Disney character!

We decided to go back to the room again to drop off our drawings so they wouldn't get ruined and then headed back out through the DCA-GCH walkway. I decided that this would be a great time to ride GRR as it was mid-day and warm. We got on the raft and promptly got absolutely soaked. Then we headed back to the room yet again to change. Ralphie was not happy!

Back out to DCA for more TSM which we rode a few times. Soon it was late-ish afternoon. That's when we remembered the park ticket deal! We had been told that the DTD Travel Co. office closed at 4pm so we were running to make it there! We did finally make it and added the park day, but we really did cut it close to their closing time!

We went back to DCA for more TSM and ITTBAB - another movie we had been avoiding at WDW because of the boys (this one really did freak out our older son a few years ago and we haven't tried it since) so it was fun for us to see again. We did the tortilla factory tour (OMG - the free tortilla was totally disgusting!) and then the sourdough bread tour. The bread tour was really interesting to me. I loved the Mickey loaves! We wandered around DCA some more and went through the Blue Sky Cellar display which was really neat. We may have to come back with the boys when the Cars area is complete as DS3 LOVES that movie!

A few more rides on TSM and we headed out for the evening.
4267254178_056b5bb716.jpg

Parting shot of DCA

By the time we were back in the room and had relaxed a bit, we decided to get dinner at Whitewater Snacks. First we stopped at the concierge desk as we had decided that we were going to do the character breakfast at Storytellers on our very last morning before we checked out. No problem getting this reservation. Whitewater Snacks was totally empty - I almost felt bad to have the CM make us our food! We both got the pizza and salad combo. The salad was gross. Not sure if it was the dressing or what but I did not eat it. Pizza was ok.

We watched some TV and made our plans for the next morning: Toontown Morning Madness!

I'm really enjoying your TR! I laughted everytime you mentioned broccoli because I dont just think it was "veggie of the week" everytime we have been to BB they serve our meals with that broccoli and white asparagus...Must just be a DL thing?!?! I always wonder if they ever have anything different?!?! :confused3

Your picture of the dragon from Fantasmic is awesome!

Oh and that jambalya looks soooo yummy!

Loved the update! You guys got to see some neat stuff! IASM was closed for us too! Boo. Oh well.

I have a few things to say about that food at Blue Bayou. What's so "Cajun" about that salad? Was there some special ingredient that I'm missing?
And that Jambalaya does NOT look like the kind I make. Jambalaya does NOT have red sauce in it! No way! And that rice for that Gumbo? It looks like red rice (mexican rice)...either that or once again, Disney turned what should be brown juice into red sauce! That rice is the reason I didn't eat the Gumbo at DL when we were there. :rotfl2: They need some REAL cajuns over there cooking for them!!! :rotfl2: And you need to come to my house so I can cook you a real Cajun meal!!!! :rotfl2:

But I'm glad you had a good time! It looks like a really neat restaurant!

I certainly could have used that white asparagus, just for a little something different! Next day report will also include broccoli!:rotfl:
Great report - looking forward to reading more :thumbsup2
Thanks for jumping in!
Nice update! Wish I could get DW to ride TSMM a couple times in a row...
We were really taking advantage of not having the kids with us...the youngest rode it with me last time in WDW and totally freaked out with some of the 4D effects, namely the puffs of air that shoot at your face. He refused to go on it again, even just to ride (not to play) so we had to take turns with our older son. Now we actually got to ride it (and other things) together and as many times as we wanted!
Excellent TR.

Jack
Thanks Jack!

Thanks - usually my trip pictures are just so-so, I was so excited to see that I had caught that!

Ha ha ha:lmao: you are cracking me up! Have you ever eaten at WDW Boatwright's at POR? Their "cajun" is the same! I have had jambabalya there as well...it was red too! I think the salad had andouille sausage on it - I don't know if that makes it cajun? I don't think the rice on the gumbo was red - I think it's just my camera (however these were taken with the "cuisine" setting), I think it was white, or maybe yellowish???:confused3
 I still can't get over that RED Jambalaya!!!

:rotfl2:

:rotfl::rotfl:

Catching up again! :cool1:

Too bad about Napa Rose! Alot of money for disappointment! I'm going there this month. Hope I have better luck!

Oh, and I'm born and raised Californian. I would have offered a bandaid too, or would have taken one if offered. That lady was just plain paranoid. :scared: Most of us are pretty nice and open. :goodvibes

Great report!popcorn::

Found your report a bit late and am so glad I did! We are making our first trip to DL in July. I love reading other WDW veterans experiences.

We have been debating Napa Rose, but I think I have decided we will skip it. I haven't read enough really good reviews to justify the cost.

Looking forward to more!

I do hope you have better luck at NR!
Honestly, I don't know that the lady was from California. Actually I sort of assumed she wasn't - maybe because I am used to WDW where it seems that the majority of people are from elsewhere.

Thanks for reading! We really loved DLR - I am sure you will too!!! I would say that NR wasn't worth the cost, but I am sure others would disagree.

Hi there! I love your TR so far. And that pic is one of my favorites. I love Fantasmic!
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading more. :)

Fantasmic was wonderful. I am so glad that we did the FDP because there really were people saving spots at least 2 hours prior. We just don't have the patience for that!;) Thanks for jumping in!!!:woohoo:

This morning we got to enjoy another perk of staying at the GCH - ToonTown Morning Madness!:thumbsup2
We got into the park and to Toon Town right on time for the town hall celebration. This was really cute and afterwards, everyone there got a ToonTown Honorary Citizen pin.

ToonTown City Hall

4355250142_89b791ed41_b.jpg

ToonTown sign

We then decided to ride Gadget's Go Coaster since there was no wait. We had to sit separately because these cars are so small. The ride is so short that they were letting everyone stay on for a second ride. We then walked through the Toon Town houses. Our favorite was Minnie's house, there were just so many cute interactive things.

4266527127_ac6223507f_b.jpg

I loved this dishwasher with the dishes floating around in the bubbles

We then wandered over to ride Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin. This made me feel a bit ill because Ralphie was spinning the car every which way. After this we wandered around ToonTown a bit - we really liked DLR's ToonTown better than WDW. I just seems more spacious, more room to manuever, and more to see - including interactive fun things outside of the houses. As we were wandering and checking those things out - guess who snuck up on me???

4266528285_d0d2fbdfdc.jpg

Hi Dale!!!:flower3:

I took pictures with Chip, Goofy, and Pluto as well. There were not many people in ToonTown and so there were no lines to get pictures and autographs.

After meeting with the characters, we headed out of ToonTown. At this point, it was still closed to the rest of the park visitors and there was a line forming outside of the gate. We decided to spend the day riding all of our favorites since this was our last day in the parks. So, that meant more Matterhorn, BTMRR, Buzz, StarTours, and Indiana Jones in DL and TSM, Soarin in DCA.

I know that I went through Sleeping Beauty's Castle yet again and we stopped for one of these:

4354504337_6b3402cc4f.jpg

Yum...Dole Whip:cloud9:

We had a really relaxing day, just wandering through the parks and riding the rides, checking out shops. Ralph bought a Star Wars baseball cap and we got a few things for the boys. Our youngest's birthday was 3 days away and so we got him a some gifts.

Just before park closing, we hopped aboard the DL Railroad. We hadn't ridden on this yet and so we took a trip around the park. It was fun to ride on this train as there are some differences from WDW's train - namely the dinosaur area and the Grand Canyon diorama.

We headed back to our room to drop off our bags and then headed out to dinner. We had reservations at Hook's Pointe. This night was really cold and so we hurried to find it but got totally lost. We thought it was actually in the DisneyLand Hotel and so headed there, but realized that it is actually just outside of the hotel near the pool. It was really neat because it is actually a small square room with glass windows all around up on top of a small building. Sort of reminded me of a tree house!

4354579385_ba950d7bd3_b.jpg

This is right in front of you when you enter - like a pirate ship right in front of you. I loved the treasure in the "windows" of the ship

We were seated right away because the place was virtually empty - no need for those reservations!
We really, really liked our meals here - by far the best of the trip. Service was good, food delicious... I don't really know why the place was so empty! In fact, there was a family that came in, ate the bread and had drinks and then a couple came in, sat with them for a few minutes, and they all picked up and left. I don't think they even paid for their drinks! Well, they missed out on some good eats!

4267277656_4aa225c231.jpg

Ralphie had the calamari appetizer. We have tried a lot of calamari and this was very good!

4267278890_935bf0a000_b.jpg

I had the Apple-Walnut salad (Mixed Greens, Candied Walnuts, Apple Slices, and Blue Cheese topped with Apple Cider Vinaigrette) - delish!

4267281686_0eab24fc28_b.jpg

Ralph's entree: Sauteed Mahi-Mahi with Citrus Buerre Blanc, Smashed Potatoes and BROCCOLI ;) (but look - asapargus too:)). He said this was a bit peppery but he still liked it

4266533843_50e82b9724_b.jpg

My entree: Grilled Scallops with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce, Smashed Potatoes and again, Broccoli (but asparagus too!:cheer2:). This was so good!

We left Hook's Pointe and did some browsing in DTD. I bought a DL sweatshirt. Then we headed back to the room for our last night in the beautiful GCH. It was a great day:wizard:

I love love love Toon Town Morning Madness! Wasn't that FUN!? It was so nice going through without all the crazy crowds! The first time we went to DL's TT, there were SO MANY PEOPLE so TTMM was a nice refreshing visit for us! We had no idea they did an opening ceremony so we were running all over the place like a bunch of kids excited that no one was around and then we heard the talking...so we missed the beginning of the opening ceremony but that's ok! Great update! Hooke's Point looks like a neat restaurant! Isn't it funny how there's like NO ONE in the restaurants at DL but at WDW, you can't even get in unless you make a reservation 180 days in advance?! lol Mainly b/c of the dining plan, I know but it's still funny to me!

Sorry for the last day in the parks but it looks like y'all had a great day! Yummy Dole whips!!!!

I just realized that I forgot to mention our lunch on our last day in the parks. We ate on the big deck in DCA. DH had fish and chips from the Farmer's Market and I had the Santa Rosa Corn Chowder in bread bowl from the Pacific Wharf Cafe. His fish and chips were "ok" - he always gets fish and chips from the UK in Epcot and he thinks those are better. I loved my corn chowder. I have never been a huge fan of the bread bowl because I don't like soggy bread, but I ate the chowder so fast, the bread wasn't too soggy!;) Delicious! Sitting on the big deck was really relaxing, fun people watching too! Since we are always in WDW with our boys, meal time is never very relaxing so this was so nice!

;11/5/09

Our last morning in DLR!!!:eek
We woke up early and packed up anything left unpacked from the night before. Then we headed out to our character breakfast at Storyteller's Cafe.
I LOVED the decor of this restaurant. It was pretty much completely empty which was fine with us!
We both decided on the buffet - I am not a very big breakfast food eater, but I knew that we wouldn't be eating much later since we would be travelling so I thought I had better eat well! The one disappointment was no Mickey waffles on the buffet, however our server overheard us talking about this and said that the chef would make them and bring them out for us. I am not sure if this is usual practice. I would think they should just have them on the buffet then? Either way, they were yummy - if I have to have typical breakfast type foods, give me Mickey waffles (and Crystal Palace puffed french toast) please!!!

4267282954_dfd4c8c9bb_b.jpg

Ralphie visits with Chip at breakfast. I just loved the miners/workers decorations that line the walls in the restaurant (behind and to left of Chip)

We met with Chip and Dale, Brer Bear and Brer Fox. There were only like 3 tables occupied (including ours!) and so had a lot of time with each character and I think Chip and Dale came by twice!

After breakfast we took that sad walk back to our room to gather our things for check out. We grabbed our things and said good-bye to our wonderful GCH room:sad2:

We checked out and caught a cab, headed to John Wayne Airport. We flew from there to O'Hare.

4267284262_9fe7dcb6cc_b.jpg

What a view from our plane window - the Grand Canyon!

I hate O'Hare. I try with all my might to never have to have a layover there! Once I was flying with 2 friends for a work conference in Seattle and we had an O'Hare layover. Just before they announced our descent into O'Hare I got up to go to the restroom. The flight attendant told me I had to wait until the gate because we were about to land. "No problem" I thought. And then we landed and taxied for like 30 minutes! We taxied over a highway! I was like "You have got to be kidding!" as my bladder shrieked! I was in tears by the time we got to the gate. I had to abandon my friends and be that person who pops up as soon as the plane stops and barges down the aisle "pardon me, excuse me, pardon me, etc. etc." and ran to the nearest bathroom. When we all finally caught up with each other we realized we had to sprint to our connection which was far away - we barely made it!

Well, this time I was nervous that our connection gate would be a million miles away, but it was actually just two gates over so not too bad! We sat for about an hour then got on our flight home. My dad picked us up from the airport and we were home! It was great to see the kids (who were sleeping - and were upset that their grandma and aunt were gone the next morning replaced by their parents - how boring!)

Soooo.....what did we, WDW vets, think about DLR???
Is the West Mouse House the Best Mouse House????

Ralphie: "I don't think so."
Me: "Absolutely!!!!!":cutie:
I truly loved DLR. More than WDW :scared1:- no kidding. I loved how everything was in walking distance - no need to wait for the bus or the monorail and then jam into either like sardines. So easy to go back to our room when we needed to and the GCH is so gorgeous! I loved how it seemed that DL and DCA had all of the best WDW rides in those two parks. I loved how many of the rides had lines outside or boarded outside. I am not proud of chickening out on Space Mtn again, but I really enjoyed Matterhorn and of course BTMRR! I loved how relaxed we were - of course that may have something to do with being there without our kids! ;)

Overall, we had a great trip! I didn't think that we would consider going back, but I think someday we will! I think when the boys are a bit older and will better tolerate the long plane trip, we might do a similar adventure, particularly if I have another work related excuse to be in CA! (Next Oct I will be heading back to San Fran for a work conferece, but that won't be the time for the family adventure)

So what is in store for us Disney-wise??? We leave on May 13th!!! We are flying to Orlando with my brother and his wife, my parents, and our gang. We are renting some huge van/SUV and staying on Cocoa Beach to hopefully catch the Space Shuttle launch on May 14th.
(When we were younger, we took a trip to Ft. Lauderdale to visit my mom's parents and WDW and while driving back tried to catch a Space Shuttle launch which we waited all day for and was ultimately cancelled)
We will stay for another 2 days on Cocoa Beach in case of postponement and to tour Kennedy Space Center, then we drop my bro and SIL off at the airport and my parents will come with us to WDW (Caribbean Beach resort). They will stay for 2 days (AK and Epcot) and fly home and we will stay for another 3 days. :woohoo:
DS3 failed his milk challenge last week:guilty:(it was horrible), so it looks like Disney vacations will continue for us for a while:dance3: (I guess that's the ultimate in bad news-good news huh?)

Thanks for reading along!

Just read your whole report and it was great! Definitely makes me want to try Hook's Pointe which otherwise I wouldn't even have thought about. I wish I could also stay at GCH, but no such luck. I have to admit, Space Mountain is one of the scarier ones! TOT is really only scary for the build up to the drop, once you're dropping it's not so bad, just knowing what's coming is nerve wracking!

I'll have to keep and eye out this summer for you WDW trip report.

P.S. I've only ever seen red jambalaya. I'm embarrassed now that it's not "real". My DH will be disappointed as that's his kind of dish. Although I'm sure he'll eat it anyway!
