My DH and our friend settled a huge problem account yesterday. As a thank you, our friend wants to take us to NYC in style... limo, matinee and dinner. We're going to try for tickets to The Producers and we'd like to eat at the Rainbow Room, but I heard that it closed a few months back. Is it still closed, or has it opened under a new owner/management?

As of September, there was a conflict going on between the owners and the owners of 30 Rock. Over the last few years, the Rainbow Room had also been moving more toward catered affairs than regular restaurant clients. I can't tell you for sure what the status is. I'd suggest giving them a call and asking whether they are serving dinner. Why not try the Four Seasons instead? ;)

I agree with Pam, that the Rainbow Room has had some problems. I also feel that it's not worth spending a dime there, since the food is mediocre at best. If you really want to paint the town red, try to get ressies at the best place in town, Jean Georges. There are so many fabulous restaurants in NYC, but the more "well known" places are generally tourist traps serving only mediocre food. Grab a Zagat's guide for NYC dining, you'll find so many wonderful places!!!

I just saw the Producers last w/end! It was FABALOUS!!! (girls day out) It was sssoooo funny!!! Great show choice!

Eat at Tony's Di Napoli. They have absolutly the BEST Italian food! It is sssooo busy, be sure to make a reservation. Order a picture of Sangreia, even if you don't like red wine (I don't), you will *love* this!

They have 2 locations, the one closest to the Producers is just behind the new Toys R Us at times square. 147 West 43rd Street (phone 212.221.0100)

This resturant is family style, meaning you order big platters of food. So it's a wonderful way to try lots of dishes.

PS, I've eaten in lots of the "names" (Sardi's, etc) in NYC, and have never been impressed

We ate there for the Thanksgiving Buffet last year. The food was mediocre (esp. for the price $$$$) but the view was terrific.

the revolving restuarant at the top of the Marriot Marquis is supposed to be fantastic. check it out in Zagat's, it might be a better choice.

Yes, it is. I was in the city today.

Thanks for finding that out for me. Lori has me intrigued with Jean Georges, though... especially if the food is only so so at the RR. I'll give our friend the info and let him decide.
