Is the heat unbearable in the summer?

Hello from another fellow teacher! We are condsidering a June trip, and getting lots of great tips from this thread. Thanks everyone!

could any of you teachers share about a trip you took that was on a shorter vacation? I'd love to spend at least 8 nights, and I would assume when you get back from WDW, you are pretty tired and need some down time before going back to school?

We took a four day trip once in September because we had a Thursday and Friday off for the Jewish Holidays. We aren't Jewish, so since we didn't need the time to be with family, we decided to take the kids to WDW. We left the Wednesday night and came home Sunday night around 11pm. Then up for school Monday.

Way too much! First, it was just as hot (obviously) as August. The crowds were non-existent, but we made the mistake of going to a water park over the weekend when tons of locals come in.

I got home and wanted to sleep for three days - but right back into the classroom we went!

I much rather have the long (we always do Wednesday to the following Thursday) relaxing - and Holy Crap hot - trip at the end of August. We come back on a Thursday and have the whole weekend to rest up before the first day of school.

Oh - I also wanted to tell youto bring extra bras!!! I know that sounds weird, but if you can't do laundry daily, you'll sweat thru a lot of bras!

:rotfl2: :rotfl: Ok, I am getting such a kick out of reading these tonight I am still laughing! I don't think this sounds weird at all and something of which I would have never thought! Thanks for the valuable tip...it's the little things that you get on these boards that you would never hear anywhere else! :thumbsup2

We went in July once and my husband said to me: Why on earth would we leave somewhere that was hot to go somewhere that is hotter?

I'm a teacher, too. As I said above, I've been in the summer and I've been in the winter. We're going this year in late June. When I think about how blazin' hot it's going to be — and it's going to be HOT, HOT, HOT in June — I remind myself that when I return home I will NOT be immediately returning to school. I don't think it's fun to return from any out-of-state vacation and have to turn right around and head to school. Add to that getting my own kids ready for school, and sometimes the school-year vacation can seem almost not worth it. I know I will be so relaxed in June with the school year behind me and the long summer ahead of me. That's how I'll beat the heat. My poor husband, however, will come home and probably head to work the next day.

My children 13 & 9 will experience their first Florida humidity this summer (end of May thru June 4) and I am somewhat worried. Being from AZ and it is already 100 by the end of April, we are used to heat - but a dry heat. But not the humidity.

I grew up in TN and vacationed every summer in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and know what to expect. My husband also lived in Florida at one time as an adult. When we visit family every summer in TN and VA, it takes me and the kids a couple of days to get used to the humidity again, but then we are fine. At least you can be outside during the day in the south. In AZ during the summer, you are only outside to get from one place to another, or you are in your pool.

We use these suggestions for daily summer survival in AZ, but I have found a few useful nuggets to apply to our vacation. I'm glad I found this thread.

Add me to the I Love going in summer crowd!

Growing up we always went the last week of July/first week of August when Sikorsky here in CT would have shut down because my mom's cousin's family would go & her cousin's dh worked/s there.

We would do like the others & go to the park for opening, leave mid-day & have lunch at the resort & swim. And then go back later at night.

I have continued that tradtion with my dh & family.

We did go the 3rd week of July the last time we went & that was hotter then in August but I am thinking because my parents came & they were in their upper 60's so slowing us down a bit, not much but a bit so we didn't have the time to run to the next a/c ride.

I just changed my dates to the 1st & 2nd week of August because I got cheap airfare for this year.

Oh & I don't think the crowds are all that bad but maybe because we would do the E ticket rides early am (now we go to the kiddie rides since that is more important then riding Space Mtn, etc..).

As long as you plan it right you will be fine. We cringe when we are walking out of the MK at 11 or 12 on an EE day & see hoards of people walking in. We are so happy to be heading back to the resort & vegging out.

Traditionally after 4th of July, it becomes "value season" at the deluxes. We can't go this summer, so I don't know for sure if that has changed for 2008.

We love the last week of August because the crowds are very low and we typically get a very nice discount at that time. We take lots of breaks and drink plenty of water and we're OK. We had one bad day at the AK a few years ago, I think we all got a mild case of heat stroke without realizing it. It was the one day we didn't take a real break, because we had a 5PM PS at Boma and didn't think we had time to see the whole park, rest and get back for dinner. Never again! I'd rather miss attractions.
