Is Space Mountain a Roller Coaster?

Wimps unite!! I don't like roller coasters and I am in a family that loves them...I can handle Thunder Mtn. and it's one of my favorite rides but I really don't enjoy Splash and I used to ride Space in my 'youth' but now I don't want to. I will have to endure the oh, Mom (or hunny) it's not bad. Please, please, please....come on don't be a party pooper.... I just want to be the fastpass runner

oh..ffftt to them..Now I WILL do multiple soaking Grizzly Rapids rides that seasoned roller coaster riders pale at..I'll just be having a churro and looking at people while they ride. And have just as much fun IMO.

Won't do Space..did Splash once but that drop was horrid (in my wimpy opinion) so won't do it again. Big Thunder I've done several times, but don't like it. Screamin NO WAY. I'm quite wimpy..

I really do not like the drop on Splash (nor do I much care for the inside of Splash...it's a useless ride for me, overall), but I *LOVE* Screamin'. Even though it makes me feel like I'll never breathe again at the take off.

I enjoyed Space this time, and yes it's a coaster, even if it's not a HUGE coaster. It's not a people-mover type ride.

I'm not a fan of roller coasters, and Space Mountain did feel like a roller coaster, however, you can't see anything other than "space", so I was ok with my fear of roller coasters, since I couldn't see what was happening. However, with that being said, it was very jerky imo. I felt sick to my stomach. My 5 year old son was dying to go on this, so we did, and he actually hit his head pretty hard because he had his head leaning slightly forward and on one of the jerks, it threw his head back and he had quite a bump, we were worried about a concussion, he hit it that hard, and didn't feel very well.

For a split second, I thought you said that your DS hit head on a cross bar!

I would consider Space Mountain a mini-coaster. It is actually just a mousetrap-type ride (like at the county fair). While we were in WDW a few years ago, we happened to go on the sky ride and rode through Space Mountain while the lights were on and it was being worked on. I was shocked to discover it was a mousetrap. All my life, I've NEVER been able to keep my eyes open on Space Mountain because I thought I was going to hit my head on something (as a kid I guess I figured if I couldn't see it coming, I wouldn't get hit--or if I did get hit, it was better not to know it was coming).

I figured once I realized it was just a mousetrap I'd be able to keep my eyes open but I still can't It is a fun ride though and I'm looking forward to riding it again in a few weeks.

There's a video on YT of someone riding SM with the lights on, I don't recall if it was WDW or DL,though. I wouldn't entirely call it a mousetrap, it's just configured in a way that is compacted into the building.

This thread certainly points up the difference between the "typical Disney visitor" and a "thrill seeker / coaster fanatic".
California Screamin' is discussed as if it's the scariest thing on wheels, but it's really a just slicker version of Magic Mountain's [Great American] Revolution, which opened in 1976.

I'll be riding X2, Tatsu, Viper, and more coasters this weekend, and fully expect to come back in one piece!

See, I don't think Space Mountain is a wild mouse/mousetrap coaster at all. Mullholland Madness at DCA is a wild mouse coaster.

Correct on Mullholland Madness. Space Mountain is really nothing like a mad mouse which has hairpin turns. It is a small and tightly made coaster but not the jarring kind like a mad mouse. I cannot do mad mouse coasters but can do Space Mountain over and over in any seat.

Clarification....I do not mean that I think Space is a wild mouse...just describing what I think the actual phrase is is for the mouse-type coasters.

Space Mountain could be called a coaster. It does have drops and dips and tight turns. It is also pretty dark in there. HOWEVER, both of my parents who are prone to motion sickness and do not like roller coasters really enojyed it. To each their own but I say give it a shot. It's a great ride and not TOO intense.

Mouse Trap was the name of the wild mouse-type ride at the Western Washington Fair when I was a kid.

Yes, Space Mountain (at least at WDW) is like a wild mouse ride. I have not gone on the revamped DL Space Mountain but will be going in a few weeks. I'll try to keep my eyes open (that will be a first) and will pay attention to the turns and dips to see if it feels similar to a wild mouse ride.

I don't think it has all the framework for each "floor" that the wild mouse picture in the previous post shows so maybe it is more like a coaster in that regard but it is built in a very small area (at least it seemed that way from the sky ride) and was in the shape of a square or rectangle.

It really is a fun ride and I'm not saying it's bad because it's like a wild mouse, I was just surprised when I saw it with the lights on.
