I's so cold there is no school!

Sonya--we live 2 hours East of you and we still had school. Thank goodness!! The sooner the kids get out at the end of the year the sooner we can go to WDW........which means slightly lighter crowds.

I was talking to my 70+ year old neighbor and she lived most of her life in Montanna. She told me that when her kids were young they called off school when it got too cold. I don't remember her exact numbers but it was in the negatives, not including wind chill.

Beast, I agree, we really take this indoor heat and air for granted. This was the 1st year we had air conditioning at my school, and August in KC is not only hot but humid. Not many businesses would insist on working conditions like that and expect to keep good help but yet a school of 1200+ people and kids is OK.

Mickey65- this is kind of what I was talking about in the original post. You all can even go out to recess in that weather! We wouldn't even have been there. Do you think you all are more used to the cold?

I saw DOZENS of kids walking to classes, dressed slightly warmer, but no coats!

This is not the kind of University that the majority of students are dirt poor.

But it would seem not to bright. :)
(Not all of them. Relax BethR)

Hey Beast! She had BETTER have her coat on!!! She got a $220 Columbia jacket for Christmas and she had better be wearing it (and I am sure that she was - she is NOT stupid - and HATES to be cold. :) )

I am glad that you said that the MAJORITY of students at Bucknell are not dirt poor. Because we DEFINATELY fall into the MINORITY at that school! We may not be dirt poor, but we surely do not fit into the income range of most of the families there. If DD was not there on scholarship - she would not be there at ALL! :)

BTW - as much as I would have liked a delay this morning so that we could sleep in, I do agree with you Beast that we tend to coddle our children a lot these days.

all I can say is if I have one more week with indoor recess I'm going to look like this::crazy:

WELL, yesterday it was -12 here with a windchill of -33 to -40 and all the schools were open. Some in the far northern part of the state had 2 hour late starts, but those were where the air temps were in the -20 range with windchills in the -45 or lower range.

I remember having an air temp of -40 when I was in school. I don't recall for sure what the wind chill was, but it was probably in that -60 range. I froze the skin on the bridge of my nose from my glasses sticking to it when the cold made my eyes water. I had a scarf over my face too, but you do have to see, so the eyes were "hanging out"!

I'm where Diane is, and my kids definitely had school yesterday. They did not have outside recess, thank goodness. Diane do you remember several years back when Arnie Carlson did cancel school statewide (this was before I had kids in school)? The temps then were around -30 though, and the windchills were -70 or so. I'm glad we don't have that right now (although it would be close if we had snow).

Frisky Kitten, I lived in Montana. They cancelled school when it was 30 below actual temperature!!! If you had to go out, the hair on your face and head would freeze up in seconds. I remember when the hairs in my nose would freeze and I couldn't breathe.

We would have to plug our car engine into a heater at night in order for it to start the next day. Now THAT was cold! :)

.......school gets cancelled now because it COLD???!!!

Good grief.

It's bad enough when school is cancelled because there's a forecast for potentially bad weather.

I know, I know. It's really, really cold out there. My boss isn't going to give me the day off because it's cold. Or snowy. Or rainy. Or what ever.

So, this teaches our kids what?
Okay, pile on.
I just wanted to say as far as the schools closing today in FL, it had nothing to do with cottling the kids. They were concerned about busted pipes in the morning, and the integrity of the older buildings themselves, and not all counties closed. Ours did not. My DD went to school. But even if they miss a day....who cares? Does no one look back at their school years and remember fondly missing a day for some reason? My DH grew up in MN and said the first "snow day" was the best, he'd wait in the kitchen listening to the radio for the official announcement. Now these kids get to say one day that they missed school in Florida because it was so cold. :)

I'm from Montana and we never had no school because of the cold. There a few -40 days came up almost every year. Only in a blizzard did we not go to school. It must have depended on the schools. And yes as Lucky4me stated the cold it is really cold, I've only been back once in the winter and told my parents that I thought summer was a better time to visit.

These are the averages for Jan in that part of Montana:
High: 20°F
Low: 2°F
Average: 11°F
Avg. Precip: 0.35 in.
Record High: 57°F (1992)
Record Low: -47°F (1969)
I lived there then but would have been 10, so don't remember but this is the temp not wind chill.

We didn't spend much time outside in the winter

Here in NE Florida, it was mainly the "smaller" counties that closed. Duval and Clay didn't close the schools. They explained on the news last night why the decision was made to close the schools. Some of the counties are rural counties and may have just two schools (elementary and high school). Some of the children live 30 miles out from the school. They were worried about them standing at the bus stop for extended periods of time. Also, it seems the school buses (their words not mine) are not able to handle the freezing temps. There were also concerns that if the buses couldn't start, there would be no way to notify the parents to pick the kids up at the bus stop.

Hey dox, we're neighbors....I'm in Jax too. :p

I picked my grandson up from school yesterday. and plan on doing the same today. He lives close enough to walk to his home in good weather. The windchill factor was just too cold for bare skin in my opinion. The "grandma" in me wanted to get out and bundle up a lot of those kids. They came running out with coats wide open, no hats, no gloves!:(
By the way, he isn't left home by himself. His Dad works the late shift. But not easy to pick him up because of two other little ones at home.
