Is Renting Points a better option than making reservation with a discount?

Is renting DVC points they best option and cheapest to enjoy the villas available through DVC? Or should we wait and see if any discounts were available?

I had heard there were discounts (about 30%) available for OKW rooms and that might be cheaper than renting...any thoughts?

Hi there. I think I can help here. We ran out of points and had the same question for a trip at Thanksgiving. I looked into the discount, which I believe was about 30%. Then I looked into rental. The studio room I priced at OKW required approx 75 points for our trip, 6 nights. I paid $10 a point to rent. That comes out to $125 nightly which was much cheaper than the 30% off, which was about $195 a night BEFORE taxes, which I figure would add at least another $20 each night.

We saved money and our rental experience was great. It's easy when you are a member, you just rent from another member. Of course it matters when you travel and what the point totals are, but I am guessing that renting will always save you SOME money.

Keep in mind that you won't be renting any points- they are useless to anyone except a member. You are actually renting a reservation, made using points, from a DVC member. You will pay no taxes on the rental, but would with a cash reservation thru Disney.

As with anything, make sure to compare costs before deciding. Look at what the room would be thru Disney (with any available discounts) and what it will cost thru a DVC member.

If you are looking at Sunday to Thursday nights, renting is the way to go. The higher points on Friday & Saturday might not be worth it. For example, I needed a 1 bedroom for OKW for a Friday and Saturday night in May. It was 48 points per night, so it would have been $480 at $10/point. Rack rate was $385, with the member discount $288, AP rate $270.

I am thinking of trying for a GV at Hilton Head in May next year after my husband graduates from med school. We don't have enough points to do a weekend - just wondering - can you reserve with cash this early or do they hold the GV until a couple months out for point reservations?
