My teen was instant messaging six people at once yesterday while sitting next to me. I was reading along because I was fascinated that she could keep up six conversations and not confuse them. Five of the six kids used prolly repeatedly. :confused3 I told her if I ever see her type prolly instead of probably, I would chop her hands off! :lmao:

Fast forward to just now. I read three posts by completely different people on here that used the word prolly. Two of the three didn't abbreviate any other words or use slang in their posts. Maybe I am missing something and prolly is a word?

No, it is not a word, and I hope to never see my dd use it when she starts texting.
I don't know what its is but when I see that it just annoys me.

No, it's not a word. And I find it annoying as heck wen people use it, especially adults. It's makes them sound dumb truthfully.

I'm amazed at how much people abbreviate. I use LOL regularly but most everything else in posts, texts and IM's I type out. What killed me was on New Years my Mom texted me "How R U? Love, Mom"

My 57 year old mother is even in on it! Yikes!:confused3

Ugh I hate when people use that spelling instead of the normal spelling. My friend's little sister and her friends say that as well as talk in IM. I told her she could no longer speak to me unless it was English because I had no idea what she was saying! :rotfl:

'Probably' is a long word when you're using your thumbs to type. So I don't blame them. Now, using it in a term paper or a professional document? That's another story.

NO IT IS NOT!! Just like "preggers", "pressies", and all the other assinine *******azation of words!! :headache: :headache:

It's modern day slang. Not one person on these boards can claim they have never used slang before. Is the word prolly appropriate for use in real letters, school work, etc? absolutely not.

Thanks! I thought I may have missed the memo. ;) I guess I expected it with the teens last night but when I saw it in 3 posts and they didn't abbreviate anything else, it certainly made me wonder.

I had never seen that word until the DIS. I've always assumed people who wrote "prolly" also pronounced it that way as well. Do people say "prolly" or just spell it as an abbreviation?

Saying prolly I don't understand. I thought the OP was referring to it being typed. Maybe I misunderstood. Funny thing though; just in this thread alone: memo, IM and DD are abbreviations as well.

Probably is 8 letters. Prolly is 6 letters. I don't text but 2 extra letters shouldn't be too difficult.

I do abbreviate sometimes. My biggest one is DD. It is easy and fast plus I don't post my kids names. But prolly seems messed up to me. It really isn't even close to the way probably is spelled. I am curious if kids type it this way most of the time, will they start pronouncing it that way?

I can see IM and DD being true abreviations but I mean really typing out 6 letters instead of 8 is too much for people to do :confused3
Unfortunately I think prolly is actually a spoken term among todays youth and has since translated into texting and typing. I have heard my 16 yr old niece use it  .

I don't know why that one bothers me so much but it does. I guess if I was going to abbreviate probably I'd shorten it to prob. On the other hand as I've started texting more I have started using abbreviations. For some reason though prolly makes me crazy!

I wonder how long until there is a Texting Version of a Dictionary made? :confused3

Maybe Northern Michigan was different but I grew up with "prolly" being a normal part of informal speech in everyone's vocabulary. Typing it out, however, is definitely part of new chat and text speech, but I would rather use "prob."
