Is peanut butter considered a liquid?

It's a gel so you need to put it in your checked bags. The PP who suggested the individual sized packages had a good idea. It's not that you can't have liquids. You just have to have smaller amounts of them. You could have a 1 litre bag full of the single serve packets if you wanted to.

Here's what TSA says about traveling with food, including peanut butter:

"Not sure about what you can and can't bring through the checkpoint? Here's a list of liquid, aerosol and gel items that you should put in your checked bag, ship ahead, or leave at home if they are above the permitted 3.4 oz."

  • Cranberry sauce
  • Cologne
  • Creamy dips and spreads (cheeses, peanut butter, etc.)
  • Gift baskets with food items (salsa, jams and salad dressings)
  • Gravy
  • Jams
  • Jellies
  • Lotions
  • Maple syrup
  • Oils and vinegars
  • Perfume
  • Salad dressing
  • Salsa
  • Sauces
  • Snow Globes
  • Soups
  • Wine, liquor and beer

Nooooo What will I do without my cranberry sauce. :worried:

We brought the small individual cups, we just put them in a baggie.

Now if you leave PB in your car in July in NE it is really a liquid:thumbsup2

As long as each one is under 100 ml and they all fit in a quart sized bag, that should be fine. Doesn't really make that much sense, but those are the rules.

Can someone remind me why liquids are banned? Was there actually an incident that involved liquid explosives?

There was an incident. If I remember correctly, people had brought drinks with them that had ingredients that they could mix together to cause an explosion, or something like that. It was stopped but that's why they decided to ban the liquids. I had a jar of peanut butter confiscated on my last trip to Florida. We were sad.

Supposedly peroxides. That stuff is really nasty too. I've heard of people losing a hand trying to mix the stuff, even when it didn't explode.
