Is naming our baby Elsa weird or strange??

My prediction is that she will be one of many Elsas born this year. As long as you're okay with her being Elsa (whatever the first letter of your last name is) all through her school years, then go for it.

No kidding. I used to work on a Mother/Baby floor and you would not believe how many Ariels, Belles, and Jasmines I saw, even two Cinderellas (I kid you not. Who would do that to their kid?) Of course, this isn't any different from the parents of my generation who named their girls Patti, Cathy, Debbie and Judy. I once worked in a NICU where we had 4 Cathys and 3 Judys; sometimes we would all be on duty at the same time. :faint: And yes, we were Cathy D, Cathy S, Cathy B etc.

Considering the number of people who named their kid Vanellope last year (68 btw) I think you're okay with Elsa. At least it was a real name before the movie came out. Maybe not popular but not something made up just for a movie either.

ETA - and as PP noted names are cylical. When I was young there were nine kids in my kindergarten class of with the same first name (Yes, 9 - out of 21). Now a days I don't know of anyone giving their kid my name. And my kids names are considered unusual, but they are good old fashioned names that lots of people once used. My middle son's name was number 872 the year he was born and he is one of only two kids in a school system with almost 2,500 kids (three towns mind you) with that name but I can name at least a dozen celebrities of my age (and older) with his name. Same goes for his younger brother. He is the only kid in the school system with his name.

Oh, and one more thing. To my mind it's a good name if you can go to the little spinny stand when you're on vacation and find a key chain, or pen or whatever with your kids name on it. Managed that for all my kids - I'm betting the same would be true of Elsa. I have a relative who always gets upset because she can never find her daughter's name on any of the trinkets - yet at the same time she was the one who was so proud of having a ''unique" name for her daughter.

I have friends with girls named Ella and Ellie (2 different families).

When I was growing up, I heard people say I must have been named after Debbie Reynolds. Lots of Debbie's around my age.

In my August 13 babies mommy group...We have a lot of movie and TV show names...A few Bella's, Jacobs, Edwards, Cullens. Makes sense since most of the moms in that group were of the right age when Twilight was out...Also, Game of Thrones....One person named their child Kahlessii...I kid you not...Its a made up word. There are a few Arya, and at least one Sansa.

I named my DD Emma, and someone I work with actually asked me since I am a Harry Potter fan, did I name her for Emma Watson...uh, no. We chose Emma because its a family name.

Now my coworker(who is in labor as I type this) is naming her son....Donatello...Neither parent is Italian....Whenever anyone hears the name, they all say Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles....but to each their own...

My theory...think of your child as an adult...This is the name they will live with forever...Will they hate you for giving them something bad?

I think it's fine to name your child Elsa if you love the name. :) But if you already have a son named Olaf or Sven, you may be pushing it. :lmao:

There are at least two Bella's in Kindergarten at my son's school. I assume all their parents are Twilight fans. As long as you are okay with people knowing exactly why you named her that forever, go for it.

Ugh! That drives me crazy about my DD (Bella) I have not read one page of a Twilight book, nor viewed one scene of a Twilight movie! But I get asked if she was named after the movies. Or now that she is older and beginning to read some teen books, people ask if she has read Twilight yet. Ummm, no! She isn't old enough!

(for the record, she was named after a character on Days of Our Lives. I always loved tthe name Isabella, ever since John and Marlena named their baby that when I was a kid! :lmao: )

I guess I'm really OLD-but when I first heard this name associated with the movie I misheard it as 'elsie' and thought of elsie the borden's cow:scared1: then when dd informed me it was 'elsa'-I immediately said "they named a Disney princess after the bride of Frankenstein?":scared1::scared1: (Elsa Lanchester, who portrayed the original bride of Frankenstein, and who was married to probably the best actor to ever portray the hunchback of notre dame-Charles Laughton).

(for the record, she was named after a character on Days of Our Lives. I always loved tthe name Isabella, ever since John and Marlena named their baby that when I was a kid! :lmao: )
FYI - Belle was named after Johns (dead) wife (Brady's Mom)

Everyone else in the world is going to be naming their baby girl this over the next year. So, you are definitely not strange.

Lol - in my state, Isabella is #2 on the list - there are several in each class. No one asks about Twilight, because it's the new Mary.

Well, I love the name.

That being said, I do not think of "Frozen", I think of the movie "Born Free" with the lioness Elsa. That was 1966. :rotfl:

So my wife and i dont know the gender yet, but for a girl i like the name elsa. Given the popularity of frozen is it too weird or strange to name your kid this??

I think it's a beautiful name and say go for it! If I heard that name on a newborn I would probably think the name's from Frozen but I wouldn't think that's strange (my kiddos are named after sci fi and fantasy book characters). Plus, Elsa is a real name :)

Elsa is a normal name, and shouldn't be an issue. I've met some kids named "Hermione" doing summer camps, so I wouldn't worry about it. :lmao:

I remember back when my kids were in school a boy named Skylar

There was a soap opera character with a name that SOUNDED like that but spelled differently-I thought it weird to name your kid after a tv show
Now its a popular name-who knew:)

It wouldn't be weird at all to me! But then again both Elsa and Anna are very common names in my family (my nana, my great-grandmother, was named Anna and her sister was Elsa.)

In my first post I spoke directly about the name Elsa. In my second (which you quoted) I was just trying to show that one can try to pick the most obscure name possible in hopes that the child will not be called "so-and-so (last name)" in school and still have that issue. Names can go from being unheard of to trendy over night.

I didn't disagree with your post, nor was I staying that anyone said there was a guarantee with other names. I didn't think I was that far off topic.

You weren't. I understood your point. When I named my daughter Sophia, it was 74 on the popularity list. Now it's number 1. Certainly not what I intended. However, I still love the name and don't regret naming my daughter that.

Like Sophia, Elsa is a classic and beautiful name. It will jump in popularity now but if you love it, go for it.

I see elsa becoming the in name for next couple of years.

Kinda like Emma or Ema the "friends baby" was 10 years ago when my youngest was born.. she has atleast two Emma's in all her classes, about 10 emma in 5th.

But there is only one other Victoria in all of her 5th grade class

Elsa is pretty name, but its going to be over used for while because of frozen.

I say go for it on 2 conditions....

1. Keep with the normal spelling. Don't try to get "Creative" with the spelling. All you will be doing is cursing her to a misspelled name for the rest of her life.

2. Unless you REALLY want people to make the direct connection to Frozen keep the names Chris (Or Christoff) and Anna off the list for future syblings

Off topic-huge DOOL fan! Isabella (another seperate person) was also Johns second wife and Brady's mom. Haha.

I have a friend with a daughter named Jasmine. When I first met her, after her child was born, the conversation came up about children's names. I always assumed she was named after Aladdin. She was not. She was named after Jasmine Guy, the actress. Silly me for assuming.

Moral- people are always going to associate a name with someone or something. Who cares what anyone else will think. You have to love it.
