Maybe it's because I was taught about the war in a north state, (and history sometimes changes according to who tells it, i.e. the history of slaves is very different when told by Caucasians vs. when African Americans tell it,) or maybe because I learned about it a century & ions ago & my memory is faulty :upsidedow, but according to the NORTH, the Southern states were always considered part of the U.S.

But, the South, like wayward teenagers sometimes do, declared their separation and considered themselves a separate entity.

:confused3

But that map is simply color coded to show you who was calling themselves what on a state government level.

Only those states that seceded (could be misspelled) and underwent reconstruction are part of the south. But be aware there isn't one southern culture or accent. Even in south carolina there are multiple cultures and accents. There is a saying here "john doe is more cotten than rice." Or more rice than cotten.
MO is not a southern state. It is a border state and like all border states experienced some of the ugliest battles during the war.

This thread reminded me of something I saw recently that made me laugh:

Ah. Thanks for the clarification.

You can't use the Civil War to decide if a state is North or South. California was a state at that time and you don't say it is in the North.:lmao:

You do have to take in the Civil War as part of the equation. This whole thread shows that it is more than geography which determines what constitutes a Northern, MidWestern, Southern, Southwestern state, etc. Culture and attitude also play big part. A lot of that was formed, or divided during the Civil War.

For the South, the war wasn't about equality of fellow human beings, it was about the North demanding that they give up their way of life, their culture, their ideas, attitudes, ways of being, thinking, behaving & talking - their rights.

Missouri was a border state. It was below the Mason Dixon line which would have made it South, but according to the map I linked to, being a border state, meant they literally fought their own brothers. :sad1:

We have people here in this thread from MO either think of themselves as MidWest or North, yet know of people in So MO who consider themselves Southern. So it is a border state still & depends in part on their particular locale, culture, accent & mentality.

California while geographically south, isn't considered part of "The South" as it fought for the North during the Civil War.
