Is Microsoft Excel essentially the same as spreadsheet in Microsoft Works?

My computer at work crashed last week. Our computer guy was absolutely unable to get anything off of our hard drive. We had to reload everything!!! I do back up my quickbooks work each day so I had that after I reloaded my quickbooks. For some reason though we no longer have Microsoft Works after reloading our main computer disks. I am a computer dummy but I just assumed it was on the Gateway computer when it was bought and would reappear when we downloaded all of our cds. Because it isn't there I can't reload what was saved on my other back up disks that I had for some of my spread sheets. It is nothing that can't be replaced but will take a while to redo. Excel is there but I have not used it much. Excel seems to be the same principle, but to me I am having a much harder time than with the other. I guess it is just me, but I don't know. Thanks for just listening.

They are basically the same, but in the words of Emeril, Excel is kicked up a notch.

That stinks about losing your data. Live and learn and DON'T buy another Gateway.

Boots,

if you'd like I can send you a copy of my 2002 MS Works. I don't use Works since I have the full line of MS Office.

Works is essentially a stripped down version of Office. There are a lot of things that Excel can do more of than Works. You should be able to do the same things in Excel. It all runs in the same principle = the icons, keyboard shortcuts, etc.

Hope that helps.:)

I use Excel at work and MS Works at home. The spreadsheet function is very similar to Excel, but I find that Excel offers a lot more options. It also depends on what versions you have. I just bought the full version of Works for about $30 (before I only had a demo). I'll sometimes send spreadsheets home to work on them. I just have to remember to "save as" the correct format.

You may be having a much harder time because of the additional options. Look to see if there is a loaded tutorial that may help you, or check the Microsoft webpage for one.

Good luck!

If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to change the format of those old spreadsheets to Excel. I'm pretty sure I have done that in the past.

Good luck getting everything back in order!

Your computer didn't catch on fire did it? I actually had that happen one time at work.

all you have to do in excel is go "file" "open" then change the pull down box to read "MS works files" with a .wks extension.
