Is Kazaa legal or not?

I use the Rhapsody music service.
Heres my initial review:

I use Dell Musicmatch and download for .99 a song. I like Musicmatch because my Dh is a DJ and I have loaded all of his CD's into my computer under Musicmatch and play them all the time! It is so easy to use!

I've used both Bearshare & Kazaa. I find Bearshare easier and works better. Kazaa seems to have a few gliches lately. You can download their "free" version which of course gives you some pop - ups. I was able to delete those and don't have any problems.

I would recommend scanning anything you download for viruses. I found a virus on something I downloaded and Norton got rid of it for me!

Don't know about many of these services, but I agree with Alex; If you download the song/program without the author getting their royalties that part isn't legal.

As far as Virus Scanning software goes, well, I went around and around with some techs at Mcafee. Since you click on an Opt-In button when loading Kazaa, Gator (the ad/spy-ware component) is not considered a virus. (I think someones legal department is making a distinction). It is considered Ad-Ware. I have never been able to rid a system totally of Gator without reformatting the system, but I have been told by some that they have.

Kazaa light does not load Gator, but again, there are legality issues that the OP sensed, why else would they ask the question?
