Is it wrong to spank your child?

This discussion came up with my siblings when we were all vacationing together this last week. My son is known as the "best behaved" child, but I am the only one who thinks spankings are sometimes warranted. DH and I will spank if we have sent DH to timeout, but, well, it doesn't work. He is a very stubborn child, there are rare occasions when he will be sent to timeout, refuse to stay there, we will sit there with him to make him stay, and then he will do something like bite us. That is when he gets the spanking, and he knows it. My siblings tell me I am wrong (we come from an abusive home), but at that point I believe he needs it. Opinions? (Flame suit on)

I spank when it is warranted. It is few and far in between but if all other avenues have been exhausted, and behavior is not up to snuff...someone is getting a butt-whippin'.

No flames from me , I have spanked my children when they deserved it , and I will continue to do so. I can't remember the last time I did it and it also takes a lot to get me to that point , but if they deserve it , no doubt they get it.

We have spanked our children at times when time out wouldn't work. They haven't been spanked more than 4 or 5 times their whole lives but I do feel that there are times when spanking is more effective, like when we've talked to them and they do not listen. I only want what's best for them and I believe that discipline is an act out of love and respect for the child. I don't condone anyone who takes this to the extreme.

I agree, but I do remember the last time I spanked my kids - it was a long time ago, and they deserved it at the time.

I think there are times spanking is warranted -

like when they want lunch and you are on the DIS!! and keep telling you they are hungry

okay - all kidding aside -

when Julia was little she did not understand the do not go in the street concept - Mommy getting mad or trying to explain that she could get hurt didn'twork (we have a fascination with the doctor so she thought this might be a good way to go visit - and if she could get a cast or stitches...) anyway - a swat on the bottom from me a couple of times sent her the message loud and clear!!

IMO parents that are using spanking as a method of discipline need to brush up on their parenting skills and/or devote more time to their children.

IMO people that use these statements don't have kids or if they do, are responsible for the high number of kids in the youth detention centers.

I am not a parent, but plan to have kids at some point in the future. I think spanking is acceptable in very rare circumstances - when absolutely nothing else works, and it is to enforce a rule that is for their own protection. And when I mean spank, I mean a quick swat on the bottom, not an outright hit or smack - that imo is abuse.
