Hi All,

I have heard you can order sandwiches roiom services and take them on land when you visit a port. I have heard this is OK and heard it is not OK. What is the real story? I don't want to break any rules.

Thanks,
Renee

You can order a lunch and take it ashore. Not really necessary at Castaway Cay, though as a really nice lunch is served there....

Hey, just up the road from you! It's not against the "rules" - with the main focus being there is no "rule". Bring baggies with you, though. I think it'd be a stretch to request they each be individually wrapped, if you know what I mean. ;)

I believe it depends on whether you have deli mustard on it.

Lots of people do this, order some sandwiches / take some fruit etc ashore when doing excursions / port visits as the last poster said be shore to take along some ziplock bags and a collapsible cooler to throw some drinks and snacks in if you wish.

If you don't plan on having the sandwiches in a cooler make sure you don't put mayo on them.

We have ordered sandwiches and chicken fingers from room service and packed them ourselves in zip lock bags. we had a small collapsible cooler and put ice in a bigger zip lock bag and took them on our shore excursion along with some bottled water.

Worked great. The only thing I could think of that would not be allowed would be some fruit issues in some ports...I know you cannot take any kind of food off the ship once back in the U.S., maybe some othe ports have a similar rule???

Also, as a side note....mayo does not go bad that quickly....it is a myth. I have worked for the company that makes Hellmann's for over 20 years and of course common sense should rule, but things made with mayo last much longer than one might think due to its ingredients. The mayo itself is not the real culprit, rather the things it is made with....this is from the Hellmann's website:

Is it safe to take foods prepared with mayonnaise on picnics?

Mayonnaise is NOT a food safety problem! Many of the foods that are typically used with mayonnaise, such as chicken, ham, or potatoes, are much more susceptible to bacterial growth than mayonnaise itself. The ingredients in mayonnaise such as vinegar, lemon juice and salt create an unfavorable environment for bacteria that will slow or prevent its growth. We recommend the following to keep picnic food safe:
- Chill well before packing
- Carry to the picnic in an insulated container
- Keep out of direct sunlight
- Discard leftover picnic food immediately rather than carrying home to serve later

When we were in St. Thomas a lady & her son were stopped & not allowed off the ship because they had pizza. They could either have thrown it away or eat it.

Now they did have it still on the plates very visible when walking through security, so that is probably why they were stopped.

We ordered room service the night before & put it in a soft-sided cooler. We were not even asked what was in the cooler.

You won't have a problem if you keep it in something, just don't try walking off with it in your hand ;)

OH on disembarktion we also saw a CM make a man dispose of his coffee before leaving the ship. It was in one of the styrofoam cups from the ship. He was not real happy about it.

mmouse37.....Thanks for that. I have always been a firm believer that Mayo can be used on sandwiches in lunch boxes and such. My husband works outside, and even in summer, he gets mayo (Always Hellmans!) on his sandwiches and has never been sick from it.

It drives me crazy when people gag and lecture me because my sandwich has mayo on it! THANKS A MILLION!!!!

You are welcome...again always use common sense but in my 45 years of eating mayo I have never once been sick from it either....and I do not even refrigerate my lunch sandwiches as I cannot stand cold sandwiches...I like them room temp.
