Is it time for some new monorails?

Hi everyone, it's my first time posting on the boards having been a listener to the show for quite a while and a lurker on the boards but I was very interested to hear other people's thoughts about the monorail service.

DW and I have been going to WDW for 8 years now, and for the last two years with DD. I have been going for around 12 years prior to this. Last year we bought DVC and so this year stayed at BLT and were as a result using the monorail more than we had previously, for example to go to EP.

What we noticed was the service on the monorail was pretty poor, with it breaking down three days in a row at one point.

My thoughts on it were that as the current rolling stock was put into service in 1989, and that they are now in a position where they have one less then they originally planned for (which my guess would be means less rotation for maintenance) is it time for them to splash out on new rolling stock?

Like I say it may just be a coincidence of when we came across problems with it, so I would be interested to hear other people's experiences and thoughts. Would hate to see the current trains go as I think they look great, but surely at some point, given the amount of use they get, it becomes untenable to keep trying to keep them in service.

In a addition, given the recently announced flyover to make it easier to get to monorail resorts, surely the monorail should be in decent order? I appreciate there are other reasons for the flyover in addition to this, but surely it should be a consideration.

Most of the time it's not the monorail cars that break down, its the computer system that runs them. If you notice that when it goes down, all trains on that track are dead, that is what happen when we were stuck in one for over 3 hours:( During the time we were stuck our monorail driver was on the intercom and we heard in the background the control room talking and saying that they had no idea what is wrong and they they were going to reboot the main server.

We were stranded by the monorail on our last trip. A CM told me to hire a taxi to get back to my resort. I was frustrated.

Just back from a week at the parks and although the monorail seemed mechanically sound the odor was pretty rank. Smelled like a horse farm.

I think so but with them automating the current ones it looks like they won't be getting new ones for a while.

Automated monorails? Didn't know they were doing that! When's it planned for?

I have never been a huge fan of the monorail for this reason. I've never made a trip where it did not cause it's to be late, or even miss something, due to one of its stoppages. I always advise people who opt to stay at a monorail resort specifically for the monorail that they will be sorely disappointed. I guess we shouldn't be surprised to learn that Disney's Tech infrastructure is behind much of its troubles. Their entire system is full of issues. I have no clue how they can fix it. All I know is if Amazon or Google can keep their systems free from outages or glitches surely Disney can find a reliable way to keep theirs running
