Is it still possible to cruise without a mobile phone?

The whole idea is to move towards touchless as much as possible due to the current environment, same thing you're encountering at restaurants that have QR Code menus vs paper. The paperless aspect is attractive to the cruising industry I would imagine for the more Earth-friendly aspect too.
Surface transmission of COVID-19 isn't a thing. Also, the equipment that has to be made and operated for the use of cell phones isn't particularly environmentally friendly (never mind the manufacture of the phones themselves, which also come with labor issues). That's to say the paperless thing is a red herring.

Then chalk it up to new implementation of technologies, just like we've continuously happening over the years as both Disney and the cruise lines have been at the forefront of as far as hospitality/tourism. Either way, it's happening and should be the LEAST of our worries when it comes adversely affecting the cruising experience all things considered.

Twice in the last month I had my dcl app, along with my Wdw app and HK Disney app glitch out on me. It would force me to login, then just a spinny circle. I called disney support, no resolution....they said it was my provider (but interestingly enough, all other non-Disney apps worked fine). An hour spent at my provider store and they said it was disney. Other people experienced the same issue. Miraculously after 3 days everything worked again! Only to repeat a week later.😡 It would be a comfort to know there was always a non tech alternative to fall back on. If this happens again during my cruise I guess I'm just screwed. Cant order food, or drinks, or go to guest services for help, or even get off the ship at CC. Yikes!!! App dont fail me now!!!

I think that this is purely a cost savings measure. Saving on ink, papers, labor, and equipment/maint.

While we're saving costs gong digital, then they could just make the whole MDR experience that way. Why take orders manually when you can just select item on your phone? Next thing you know, it'll just be like Chili's or Red Robin with a little wifi screen on every table and all you ever see is an expediter dropping off a plate at your table. Think of the cost savings!!

It may be the least of your worries. It's not the least of mine.

Who needs an expediter when we could just pick up our own food? And bus our own tables too? As Alan Rickman said in Galaxy Quest..."By Grapthars Hammer, oh ...what a savings".
