Is it safe to buy tickets with Northwest?

I need to buy a ticket in May and Northwest is the cheapest, but I read they are in bankrupty and if they shut down I'll be SOL! Is it reasonable to assume they'll still be in business in May or should I just get another ticket.

If you buy with a credit card you may be able to get a refund IF the airline goes out of business. NOT debit card! But then you'd have to figure out another way to get there. We have NWA tickets for July and are hopeful this will all go away, but if it doesn't my credit union (issuer of my card) has assured me that I can get my money back if they go out of business.

I have decided that my 6 upcoming trips that involve air travel will be on an airline OTHER than NWA and I fly out of DTW. I will be using SWA for my trips to Orlando, TN and San Antonio. I may even look into Air Tran or SPIRIT for a couple of my trips down to MCO.

Right now, things are too shakey for me to book on NWA because I have to be in certain places on certain days. I may pay a few $$$ more, but the peace of mind is priceless.

Last year I had tickets to fly from MCO to DTW on the day the mechanics walked out. Thankfully, it wasn't an issue, but it sure added some stress to my days!

Best wishes.
