for a blond haired, blue eyed child to 'dress ghetto' for Halloween?

I dont know.

*I* personally wouldnt be offended - but Im not "ghetto"

I actually think it's kinda funny. :confused3

I really wouldn't even rationalize far enough get to the level of calling it racist. Its inappropriate and tactless.

How old is this child and where are their parents?

What exactly would be worn to look "ghetto"? :confused3

No, it is a style of clothing. It is racist not to let someone dress ghetto depending on your reasons to do so. IMO

Well, my son is dressing like a woman. Is that sexist?

I know, I know, not the same thing, but it kind of is.

To me dressing up for Halloween is all about being something you're not. It is imitation, not insult. I think it's ok.

What is included in the costume? Blackface makeup?

Mikeeee

What does that mean? If the child is dressing as a particular rapper or someone famous then maybe not. I have (adult) friends who are dressing as Britney and K-Fed and Mr. Spears might be seen as ghetto. It would be considered racist if they are working from a misguided stereotype. I frankly find it as distasteful as dressing "hillbilly".

i think when she says 'ghetto' - she may mean 'gangsta' ? Correct me if Im wrong....

A blonde haired blue eyed gangsta - would loook like Eminem.

How is it different than other Halloween costumes?

I'd say if you have to ask if something is racist, it probably is.

BTW, how does one dress ghetto? :confused3

That is the first thing that crossed my mind.

What would one wear to look ghetto? If it's an Irish ghetto or a Polish ghetto for example she won't need a costume.

I really hate how *in* the term ghetto has become...It's an ugly ugly word with hundreds of years of history and kids throw it around like it's cute

For the record, this is my child and her parents are involved thank you very much. She suggested this (her words in my op) and both DH and I were uncomfortable with the idea. CR's picture show what she had in mind. I felt it was similar to dressing in 'black face.'

She doesn't see it as a big deal because 'friend S thinks it's funny and he's black.'

DH dropped our younger daughter off at daycare this morning and an adult was dressed in a similar manner (today is their party).

Regardless, this will not be her costume I'm just trying to figure out if we're overreacting.

Good point. It has come to mean something different in the modern lexicon but it is a loaded word.

Gee I see kids of all races dressed like that everyday. I don't see what is "ghetto" about that. I agree with Jenny, ghetto means so much more. :sad2:

there are irish ghetto's? ( learn something new every day)

I dont think its offensive, unless they wear blackface makeup or something:confused3
I mean its not only black people who wear that style of clothing, but imo, its not the greatest costume idea in the world:upsidedow

I don't think you're overreacting. I wouldn't consider it in good taste either, not even as a Halloween costume.
