Is It Possible To Get Food Poisoning From Wine?

My sister bought some cheap wine (& I don't mean "cheap" strictly pertaining to price) last night. While she had a little more than she should have, I only had a couple glasses. I didn't experience any of the side effects "over-indulgence", yet we both got really sick. It's really similar to when I had food poisoning.

I know that technically drinking alcohol is giving small doses of poison to your system, but I didn't even have enough to really even get much of a buzz. And even today I am still pretty sick & I haven't eaten at all. I'm going to try to have some soup, but I'm feeling really "iffy".

There's also a stomach bug going around, so that might also be the case.

Not really sure Jeff but I do hope that you and your sister feel better soon! :)

No, but it very well may be the SULFITES that are in wines (and more so in cheap wines, it seems).

Hope you feel better soon!

How do the sulfites effect a person?

I'm starving but the thought of food is getting me pretty green around the gills.

I have had wine "go bad", but only after it has been opened for a spell.

Hope you feel better.

I don't know a whole lot about wine, but I think that the problem with sulfites is that a lot of people are allergic to them. If that's the case, reactions could vary greatly. Being sick to your stomach is quite possible.

I am Highly allergic to sulfites!!! Sulfites are in wine, beer and alot of food products. Some have a little sulfites and some are loaded. I have had severe reactions in the past. When younger I drank a few glasses of cheap wine and got deathly ill. I had severe stomach problems(if you get what I mean), my chest turned red and threw up violently. I could not breathe and was going into shock. I should have gone to the hospital. Luckily I threw up a few more times and was fine. I have had severe reactions to meat tenderizer, Little Kings Beer, Chili, salads and dressings, food dishes containing wine and even desserts. Everytime I have had a reaction to sulfites, I do not feel like eating for a day or two. Unfortuneately, companies like to put sulfites in their products to keep the shelf life longer . Please be careful. Sulfite reactions can cause anaphylactic schock and even death. Drink lots of water, see your doctor and I hope you feel better!!!

Highly allergic to sulfites
I don't drink wine or order anything with wine in it
I get sick as a dog
skin gets all red, hot burning up like extreme fever, dizzy,
throwing up all over the place
I hate this feeling I hope I never get it again
I thought I was dying & I mean dying
Hope you feel better soon

Another vote for sulfite allergy. If it was red wine, I bet that's your culprit. Makes you very sick....I've sworn off wine for that reason, too.

I hope you & your sis feel better soon, Jeff....*HUGS*

What they all said, Jeff! Cheap wines are full of sulfites and many people have allergic reactions to them. I won't drink "cheap" wine because of it. You can DEFINITELY feel very ill after just a couple of glasses of wine if that's the case.

Just drink lots of water and give it time. You should feel better tomorrow if it's the wine; if not it's probably a virus. Don't force food, there is no point if you're not feeling like you can keep it down.

Hope you feel better soon!

This is the first time wine has had that kind of an effect on me.

I usually drink red wine & I usually buy the more reputable brands. Not always the like most expensive stuff or anything, but against my better judgment I went with what my sister bought. It's Almaden White Zinfandel.

I ate a plate of pasta, so I'm feeling a little better, but I'm feeling drained. Physically it feels like it's about 3am, but the mind motor is still revving.

I appreciate you guys. :)

What an interesting thread!!!!! And WOW does it explain a lot!!

I gave up alcohol way back in the '80's but last winter when my DH had a heart attack, his heart specialist strongly urged him to start drinking red wine. So I started drinking a glass or two with him.

Well......there have been several times in these past 6 months (of drinking this wine) that I have been terribly ill, the last time being just two weeks ago. I had drank a couple of glasses and fell so violently ill that night I truly thought I was going to die! I kept laying there thinking I didn't drink THAT much so I couldn't understand why I was so sick.

Now, thanks to this thread, I think I know why!! No more wine for me!:D

I think part of the thread is that 'Cheap' wines are the worst when it comes to sulfates.

Find a nice, non-cheap red and I think you may be ok....

And besides, BigD's got a sissy stomach so that might explain things.... :smooth:

Tell ya what JF, we'll go down to a pub & have some pints of Guinness & then we'll find out which one of us has the sissy stomach! ;) :teeth:

I'll be in WDW during DIScon. I'll have my Guiness ready. I'll probably stop for a Weiss in Germany too.... Maybe you'll need to sign up???

All talk and no play makes BigD a dull boy. ;)

The gauntlet has been dropped!
