Is it possible to book Hilton Head in summer if I am a SSR owner?

We have not been able to get DVC HHI in the summer for three years in a row. Last year, we stayed at a Marriott the week before the 4th of July on one of those timeshare preview deals.

We never tried to waitlist - because not getting HHI meant we went ahead and bought APs to do two summer trips to WDW.

It's a very small resort.

We have stayed there at Easter and in January. We lucked out Easter the year we went - temps were in the 80s mid-day. The beach was still ice cold, but the pool was great. The day we left, the weather turned and the high was in the low 30s. January was freezing. I'll keep trying to get a 7-month summer reservation - someday I'll probably get lucky, but it's not something I'll count on.

We too are SSR owners and have tried for the past two years to get into HHI in mid to late August with little success. (I wanted a studio S-Th) I started calling at the 7 month window and continued to call day by day and had no luck. Then I went on the wait list. Still nothing. After considering another resort at either HH or another beach, I called back and was able to book Fri, Sat and Sun nights with points and a cash ressie for Wed and Thurs. so far that is the best I could do. From what I have heard from others, a two bedroom or villa may be easier as is June. Even paying cash, iit still cheaper than 1 week at another resort. If we ever add on, I think it would be HHI so I could have the home advantage.
Good Luck

What about late september or early october? Any easier to book at 7 months? And how is the weather at those times? It's not freezing cold by then is it?

I think you would have better luck when schools are back in session which would be late August on. Weather is still pleasant then and the ocean still warm enough to swim in Sept. according to what I have read. Air temps still in mid 80's in Sept and mid to upper 70's in Oct.

HH gets progressively easier and cheaper starting around week 33 or 34 (mid to late August) back up to mid March with only a couple of blips along the way for holidays. Other than the threat of hurricanes, late Sept to early Oct is likely the absolute best time to visit. A little cooler, a lot less crowded and the water is still warm. And it would be fairly easy to get in either at DVC there or on an exchange. Much of this time you could work it so your cost was far less than simply paying the dues on a timeshare there.

If you're looking at going at times other than the summer, check the cost of a night with your MS discount. We were looking online (Expedia) to go at another time of year for a long weekend, and rates in Feb were $100/night. I was shocked! So you might be able to save your points for another vacation and still get a great deal on a room by paying cash.

The rack rate this year for Feb. was $111 so your discount would be off of that. I believe that rate was good thru the end of the month for a studio. We were there in Feb and the weather was quite pleasant. We wore shorts with light jackets most days; sunny and beautiful with only one morning of showers.

Try renting a House There are a lot to pick. with price all over the place. If you would rent point for Disney 2 bedroom the $ for a home for the week is the same. I said we rented a 5 bed roon 6 bath home in Sea Pines with inground pool. for $3100 that was with insurance. I can give you the web sigt for a good agency if you would like to PM me. I love Disneys HHI resort and have a good trips there. I also loved renting a house and the best part was we could bring more family with us. :thumbsup2

If you decide to try II, of all the summer, you might have decent luck with II for late Aug. We have traded with another timeshare through RCI (similar to II) and the last week of Aug. was usually easy to get putting a request in at 1 year out. Most NC, SC, FL and GA schools are back in session then. Good luck. Elaine

Both DS's were stung by Jelly Fish several years ago but it doesn't keep them out of the water. We just learned to add vinegar to our shopping list!;) We find them worse at high tide.

Firecoral at CC? I never even thought about it being there! I was a wreck while we were in Hawaii. Where in CC? We cruise with a double dip in Sept.

It was on the buoys and ropes. I guess they scrub and scrub, but it grows back very quickly. It left like a 2 x 1 inch "burn" on his arm. I remember the "scar" was still noticeable a few months later. The lifeguards sprayed vinegar on his arm. From what I understand - not everyone is allergic to it. I rubbed up against the same buoy and nothing happened to me. It was on the ropes that separate the snorkeling from the other swim areas.

Have a great cruise!!!

Janis

Thanks for the info. My son is a red head and has really sensitive skin so I am going to warn him to stay away from the ropes and buoys! Thanks so much!

calling day by day 7 month mark. 2 bedroom. Also got a studio for the same time frame.

Yep, this has been my big concern, the traffic.

You know we keep reading this about traffic, but we've never really had that big a problem with the traffic. We usually go the first week of June or the week after Labor Day. We arrive on Sunday and leave on Friday. Traffic has never been a big issue to us. Now the traffic on I-95 getting there or coming back is a whole different story.

Has anyone else ever tried this. This June we check into our DVC 1BR on Sunday. We are actually going to drive down on Saturday and stay at the Hampton Inn at Sun City. I figure then we'll drive over to Savannah for dinner for Saturday night. We can then get to the resort earlier Sunday morning. I figure even if our unit isn't ready, we can go ahead and check in and have most of the day laying out on the beach or by the pool. I figure it gives us an extra day at the resort without paying the points.

I chose the Sun City Hampton Inn, because it looked really nice plus it would be easier access to Savannah. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Hilton Head a few months ago but I was not very impressed with it. It was older and had been refurbished plus the staff wasn't very good service wise IMO. Does anyone else have any experience with "cheaper" one night accomadations on the island? How is that Red Roof Inn?

We stayed at the Red Roof Inn for one night several years ago; same with the Motel 6 near the resort. We were not the least impressed with either of them.

The last time we had to do one night in a hotel/motel before arriving at the resort, we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Bluffton. Not ideal, but not too bad, either. If Savannah is your goal, there are also some motels near the Savannah airport that might not be too bad.

Also, depending on what time of the year you go, you can sometimes get one of the "nicer" hotels (like the Marriott or Westin) on Priceline, but, of course, you're taking a big gamble that way.

We've stayed at the Hampton Inn in Sun City a few times and were very happy with it. We've gone to HHI the past 3 summers (we stay at Surfwatch) and usually stay in Sun City the night before we check into our TS.

We just stayed at Surfwatch for the first time. Really lovely resort! We enjoyed the smores and bon fire with a movie. I really like the layout of the resort.

Actually you can get it through II as an exchange or with a bonus week for a 2 BR for as little as $300 depending on your II setup and what you have to trade.

We use that basic approach almost every trip. We usually leave the day or night before either after work or I take my half day off for that day and then travel, have dinner and stay overnight en-route. That way we can get in much earlier, be less tired, get lunch normally at our destination (for HH at Wild Wings), get better unit options and effectively get an extra day of vacation. I'll usually use my Bluegreen points or more often, priceline.
