Is it ok to wear dress shorts to a wedding?

The wedding is at 3pm at a church and the receptions is at a local Knights of Columbus. I found a really nice pair of black dress shorts, almost like a bermuda short. I would pair it with a dressy blouse and I have these amazing purple pumps with rhinestones on them that I thought would look perfect with it.
I've only been to one wedding before and that was mine at WDW. This wedding is a totally different style so I'm driving myself crazy about what to wear. The bride & groom are really laid back, to the point that the wedding is in 2 and a half weeks and they haven't given any details yet and I'm supposed to be doing a reading! I can't get a hold of them right now to ask if it would be ok so I thought I would ask on here.
So what do y'all think....Yay or Nay?

if i were in the wedding (aka doing a reading) i would not do shorts, although as a guest (and with heels and accessories and all) it *might* work... i would just go out and get some kind of dress? call them and ask what the dress code is! i would just go a little nicer if i were *in* it!

I wouldn't do shorts either, even at a very casual wedding. The most casual I'd do would be a sun dress. Shorts just don't seem like proper wedding attire to me.

I agree with the others. Shorts are too casual for any wedding, but especially if you are going to be in a church. I do think though that you could get away with a dressy capri and accessorize up.

I'm going to go with the shorts. Shorts are very in-vogue in the UK at the moment and there are some lovely suits with "City Shorts" around in the shops.

I also agree with the shorts. I've seen some dressy shorts that are much smarter looking than capris, or even sundresses. Paired with the right top and other accessories, it could be a very dressy looking outfit.
