Is it misleading that some resort counter service locations are open 24 hours?

I do not think it is incumbent upon any establishment, even at Disney, to protect its guests from any and all forms of disappointment. No establishment can do that. I am sure that if Disney had a lot of people expressing their disappointment that they weren't notified that they couldn't get a fresh hamburger and fresh fries at 3 AM, they'd put up a sign, but they probably don't get a lot of complaints.

While I think misleading is an overstatement, I do think that if the grill is open certain hours it should be posted ~ helps to avoid miscommunication and prevents any disappointment on the part of the guests.

:sad2:

FWIW - I am a night owl and I would love to see Disney have something open later. It's disappointing to come in late from the parks and there be nothing substantial to eat. I'm actually a bit surprised that there aren't 24 hour offerings in all of the resorts. :confused3

I agree with this - I cannot tell you how many times we have returned to our value resort after evening EMH - sometimes as late as 2 am - and we wanted a little snack but our only option was the vending machine. We don't typically eat a pizza or burger at 3 am, but occasionally with the hours we keep at the World, the craving strikes us.

I don't necessarily think it is misleading, but I can see how it might be disappointing if you were expecting otherwise. I was aware of the closure before this post and I haven't stayed deluxe before.

::yes:: I can't see that many people wanting to order something grilled at 3 or 4 AM.

Not a true statement. If I'm out drinking somewhere and I come back to my hotel, chances are high I will want something grilled and greasy. People with small kids or who are whipped from the day that are in bed by 11pm won't be bothered by this, but I'm on vacation and staying out so I'm prob going to want food like this!

What you're saying, though, doesn't contradict Cinderella94. She said that she doesn't see "many" people wanting to order something grilled at that time of night. You may want to, and maybe a few other people - but even if 100% of the people out and walking around at 3AM want that, that still is a small number of people, just because the vast majority of people are sleeping at that time.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was saying.

Bicker, you are absolutely correct. At the hotel here we deal with all these issues and sales at that hour simply do not justify the expense of the cooking staff and energy to run the grill. In business, run things at a loss and you will go out of business. Now if the few people who want something at 3:00 pm want to pay a premium for the food to cover the real costs then we'd listen but of course they won't. And, the profit on food is a much lower than most people think. That's why we push alcohol so much.

On the misleading issue, it isn't at all. Its well known that the grill closes at 11pm (all over every site) and at least at the Poly in room info and the CMs let you know.

Yes I agree that the hours for the grill should be posted.

If they kept the grill open, you know there'd be a thread with people complaining how long it took to cook them their french fries at 3 am.

...Personally if a location claims that then you should be able to order any items at anytime, like at a Waffle House which is open 24 hours or some McDonald's locations that are open 24 hours.

You can't order burgers and fries at McDonalds in the morning when they are serving breakfast foods and you can't order breakfast after, maybe, 10AM.

I agree, very common after EMH for people to be looking for food. Very often for 2 or 3 am EMH Cosmic Rays is the only thing open and they close at 1am. We have ordered room service many times at GF at 3:30am because there was nothing else available and by the number of carts the CM's had outside our door there were many people doing the same. One of the reasons we like GF is the 24hr room service including hot grilled food.

I have been to some McDonald's off Interstate 75 where you get Burgers or Fries anytime of the day no matter what.

In fact this past December we stopped off at a Burger King in Clinton, Tennesse which is open 24 hours and I got a Whopper at 10:00 AM and they were still serving breakfast.

Apples and oranges with two very different business environments and models. An Interstate will have significant truck and car traffic 24/7/365. Typically, a hotel restaurant open for minimal service over night will see 1% or less of its daytime walkup traffic.

And this is why Disney has option. If this really is a concern for you then you can stay someplace like GF or BW or BC that has 24 hr room service. I know that it costs more but you are asking for an extra service beyond the norm.... so like any extra service you pay for it. I know I'm going to hear but only the deluxes have it and we can't afford a deluxe. But if it is that big of a deal then you only go when you have enough money to pay for it. (Disney is all about options. If you can't survive a night without a 3am burger.... well there is your option.) Most people however would be of the minority if they choose not to come to Disney because they couldn't order a burger at 3am. Disney is aware of this and their revenue is the bottom line. Disney wants to make sure its guests are happy but they have to draw the line somewhere. Cause while it is our happy place... it also still a business!

There are no signs by the grills of Captain Cook's or Gasparilla's Grill & Games which say they close at a specifc time.

I realize it's a different resort, but in the Wilderness Lodge Directory of Services and Resort Map handed out with every welcome packet, it states quite clearly that Roaring Fork's grill opens at 7 am and closes at 11 pm.

What does the Directory of Services for the Poly say about Captain Cook's?

For starters, I'm pretty sure that both restaurants DO say when the grills close. Here's a picture from Captain Cook's: the definition isn't great, but you can clearly see in the top right it says that it closes at 11 PM.

That's one of the best things about GF. It's the only resort that offers a comprehensive 24-hour menu. Contemporary has a limited cold menu available during late night, Yacht and Beach Club have some hot appetizers, cold options and a cheeseburger, but GF has a huge selection of offerings. Appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, steak, chicken, fish, omelets, pancakes, waffles, etc.

If you want a 24-hour quick service option with hot food, then I don't think there's any Disney resort providing that. But GF is the best place to be if you happen to be up at 3 AM and want something satisfying.

I think it's nice that Poly and GF have 24-hour locations. If I'm thirsty or want a snack (especially GF's delicious soft serve), it's good to have an option available. Especially GF, since they provide room service that is noticeably better than other resorts.

Of course, there's lots of other appealing aspects to GF. This is just one of the smaller perks that can make a huge difference at the right moment :goodvibes

Those are clearly the exception and not the rule. Try it at any of the other hundreds of Burger Kings and you will be told no.

The term "Counter Service" is not a term that is used within the official dining plan brochure. Instead, Disney uses the term "Quick Service". Being able to pickup a pre-packaged salad, sandwich or something else is in line with what is available within the "Quick Service" product description.

I see nothing misleading about this.
