Is it just me or was this a strange request from SIL?

When my in-laws watched our kids we left a "petty cash" envelope in case they wanted to get take-out or needed groceries. My in-laws said not to leave it, but I insisted and it was left untouched. If I were in their shoes I would also leave an envelope like that untouched. When my kids go visit them (across the country) they pay for all expenses and when we have people visit us we pay for things.

Yes, I do think it's odd. I see your update...it does seem that they have a different way of dealing with money than many people. Now you know. I would not want someone organizing my kitchen, other than putting things away that I could easily change if I prefered a different way. That is too personal of a thing.

Okay, I'm laughing at myself. This big long thread about a year old baby's "expenses" and the thing that REALLY stuck in my mind was the OP's comment that when her MIL saw a shirt she thought her son would like, she buys it and then presents him with a bill. :confused3 WTH?

I guess some families are just different--I've never left money for dd when she stayed with family nor do I expect any money for expenses when my great-nieces and nephew stay with me. Or my cousin's kids. Or pretty much ANY kid. If I decide to take them on an outing, well, that was my decision and I'll cover it. I'll also feed them, buy them diapers and toys and whatever. :teeth: I'm just glad that my DH's family is the same way.

I hope you had a great trip! And don't let your MIL near your kitchen, for heaven's sake. :rotfl2:
