Is it just me, or has Disneyland Hotels gotten ridiculously expensive?

I don't mind paying for Deluxe hotels at WDW, but I was floored at the prices at DL. We are staying offsite, which is across the street. But, it's still $$$$ for our dates. Over $300 a night for a Springhill Suites, which is INSANE! Luckily we have a lot of Marriott reward points.

Yikes! That's high.

Glad you got a good price by booking ahead. Circus Circus is ON the strip as in on Las Vegas BLVD, but it's not really near the other major casinos. It's a good 25 minute walk to Treasure Island from there and about an hour to the MGM. It's like saying the Anabella is "across the street" from DLR. It is across the street, but not across from the entrance. Have a great trip.

I know (thanks though) we did Luxor one trip and Harrahs another.
We are in a position where we have already booked and paid for our Anaheim accomodation for all nights we are in the US and I am deciding rather than kill extra time in LA we drive to Vegas for a couple of nights. DH isn't stoked at flushing that money down the toilet hence the cheaper room than what we would normally get.

As I said earlier in this thread, Anaheim is not Orlando. Think more in terms of like New York City or San Francisco. No, Anaheim is not those places exactly but the Anaheim real estate is still prime location unlike Orlando.

Yeah. I am literally embarrassed to admit I am spending more money on a 5 day DL vacation at a MOTEL than I would a 10 day WDW vacation in a resort. Live and learn.

Well, I can tell you that we wouldn't be going if it wasn't for Delta skymiles and only paying $500 for 3 people total to fly there, and our Marriott points. Because airfare alone from NYC was over $500 PP. Our hotel is actually like $342 some nights...which is just insane. But, I guess like someone else said, it's on par with NYC hotels.

I guess I just do not understand this.

Yes, as has been said, Anaheim (and DLR) has higher lodging prices than Orlando (WDW). But I stay at DLR area hotels usually for $140-200 a night across the street from the resort. This July (peak season) I have a rate for $167 a night including all taxes and fees. And I do not need a rental car.

When I check the same days in July at WDW for the lowest Disney resort (All-Star Music Resort) at the most standard room using the new discount offer that just came out, it comes out to $125 per day all fees included.

For the record, I have stayed at one Disney moderate (Caribbean Beach) and the room was at best the same quality as the Best Western Park Place Inn/Tropicana/Candy Cane Inn near DLR. I have never stayed at a WDW Value Resort like All-Star Music but would guess it is lower quality than Caribbean Beach.

As for park tickets, from the WDW and DLR websites:

A 5 day ticket at WDW this July is $370 (no parkhopper or waterparks)
A 5 day ticket at DLR this July is $305 (no parkhopper)

Put all that together and that does not scream "DLR is extremely more expensive than WDW. "

I am sure we all have different situations and maybe you are including airfare in your calculation. If so that of course would tilt the field towards WDW if you leave nearer to Florida and DLR if you live nearer to California.

But if anyone is comparing apples to apples, I just do not understand some of the assertions here about DLR costs vs. WDW costs.

I don't either. We've never paid more than $150 a night for a hotel and typically pay closer to $100. With prices increasing and our family size increasing we have upcoming trips with hotels of $130 (HOJO) and $120 (DI) per night. These were booked months in advance, but not as far in advance as one might do for WDW. Looking online last weekend at hotel rates and there were good prices to be had last minute too. For us onsite WDW looks expensive because we can't stay at a value hotel with our family of 5, so we would have to upgrade to a moderate. I haven't seen moderate hotels at WDW for less than $150 a night during school out season. In our case though, it is the cost of airfare that keeps us from going to WDW. So if someone has to fly to DL than I understand their feeling that it is more expensive to go to DL.

Split stays are good at DLR. They are more commonly done at WDW, but the strategy works really well at DLR, too. There can be a huge difference in cost between Friday or Saturday check-ins versus, say, a Sunday arrival. This is probably due to so much convention business in Anaheim.
Anyhow, it's a little more work to do this at DLR because you have to move your own bags, but that's just a quick Uber ride to another hotel where they'll store your stuff until check-in time. It's one way to stretch the dollar and still maybe upgrade part of the vacation a bit. (I've even made the decision to change hotels after I'm already checked into the first one; just making sure I'm within cancellation deadlines for those cancelled/changed days.)

Wednesday through Saturday night are the highest prices during our stay. $342 a night plus tax. Crazy! Must be a convention during the week or something. They are all crazy in price during the week at that time (the Marriott brand hotels that is...didn't look at others)

Yeah, seems like the convention business makes the whole area hotel situation more complicated at DLR, because they "block" rooms for the groups and once those blocks are lifted, the availability and pricing completely changes. The upside, I guess, is that if you keep your eyes open, better deals do sometimes appear.

Last month, Spring Break trip, got 4 nights at Eden Roc for $500. Not, $500 per night. $500 for the 4 nights, taxes included (and no fees). 1 mile walk to the gate, but since we had a car (drove out from Phoenix) and free parking (sig AP) went ahead and dropped most of teh group off at the drop-off area, then parked in Toy Story. Actually, pretty convenient.

I stay on property about 1/2 the time, the other half, we stay at Candy Cane or Hilton. I love the Hilton. Can often get a room for $140 night including tax and car parking. We are headed to WDW next Jan for the first time. Been taking deep breaths when paying for airlines and rooms. It will be a great vacation, but compared to being able to drive to DLR and staying at the Hilton, I'm getting a little sticker shock.

Maybe I am going during a convention or something because I could not find a hotel across the street in close walking distance for under $200 after resort fees, parking, and taxes. Requirements being 2 queens plus a sofa bed or rollaway. We have booked Park Vue tentatively and for 2 queens plus a sofa it is $270 per night ($229 before taxes and fees) Maybe Del Sol was cheaper, but I decided against that. I found a pretty nice room at WDW for $175 per day total. I have to get a rental car plus car seats or Uber/transport for 5 people plus car seats whereas WDW had transport included. WDW has a free dining promo in Sept and obviously that would save a ton of money with 3 boys (plus my husband). Flights are about the same price wise. I am looking at a detailed comparison on paper right now and WDW is almost $1000 cheaper.

Doubletree is a longer walk or shuttle, and rates in Sept for their 2 room suites are $143 ($135 if you have AAA.)

Candy Cane Inn is $185 before taxes for a premium room, comes with DVDs, breakfast brought to you each morning, larger rooms. ($175+$10 for rollaway.)

The Majestic is a nice hotel. Used to be a Sheraton. It is $136 a night. Huge rooms.

I would keep checking as rates could change.

We are Marriott associates and I almost always book split stays - the associate rates may not be good for an entire stay (ex. 5 days) so I book days as associate rates pop up for a day here or a day there. A lot of times they end up being at the same hotel, but I just have 2...3...or 4 reservations. haha. I assume the same is true about regular rates - you get priced at the highest (or higher) daily rate (s) when you book 5 days in a row, but if you check on just a 1 night stay in that date range that 1 night may be a lot cheaper.

I agree, they've gotten rediculously expensive. We used to stay at GC and DLH and I thought back then they were pricy. Now I think their prices are crazy for what you get, which is basically just early entry. No more free parking, no breakfast, nothing. Maybe because our DD, she's 12, is older now too and the pool isn't quite as important. But we stayed across the street last time and she said she liked it better than DLH, which shocked me. We hit the parks hard though and are rarely in our room, so I'd rather spend $ on other things. I gotta say though, once when we stayed at DLH, DD got sick and we stayed in the room all day and that was nice being there with a view of DTD, since we were stuck inside all day.

Same thing happened at our stay at the DLH. My DD got sick so DW and she stayed at the hotel, chilled in the pool and ordered room service. Not being in the parks sucked but being able to stay "in the magic" was nice

I found my receipt from Disney Vacations for our first visit to DL. We stayed at California Grand with all 4 kids (little one was in a play pen). We had the meal plan and 4 day hoppers. All for $2000. I really miss those days! Now just 3 day hoppers for the 6 of us cost that much!

Well, I can remember staying at the DLH for $39 a night, and tickets for 5 of us were under $100 a day. And gas was $.80 a gal. But things go up.
