Is it illegal to drive with your shoes off?

But how would they know? Set up roadside foot check points like they do sobriety checkpoints? :confused3

No, they have a tool that samples the air as you pass. If the Cheese content is more than 100 parts per million they know you are barefoot.

I had heard years ago that it was illegal, but never gave it much thought. Interesting.

Alabama:
Barefoot Driving: Operation of a motor vehicle by a driver with bare feet is permitted. Exception: motorcycle rider.

I had heard it was illegal here and I checked and found it isn't. I've only done it a couple of times - when I've overslept and had to drive the kids to school in my pj's

Howeve, I had a friend (in New Jersey, coincidentally) who did it and was in a car accident and really messed up her feet. She told me NEVER to do it - if she'd been wearing shoes she wouldn't have had the damage she did to her feet.

So I take it as something that's common sense and not something they should have to make a law about. I now lay out my clothes the night before, so even if I do oversleep I can still find my shoes in time to wear them in the car :teeth:

Laurie, not barefoot in Alabama :)

Daxx's Wife here! This must be something mothers tell their daughters! Daxx says he never heard driving barefoot in NY State was illegal, but I clearly recalling my mother telling me that you had to wear shoes while driving. I remember coming back from the beach as a kid and her saying "I hope I don't get pulled over b/c my sandals are in the trunk" and she was driving barefoot.

Since hearing that, it stuck w/me as an adult. I drive barefoot in the summer but keep my sandals on the side door pocket just in case I get pulled over. Figure I can slide them right on before the police officer gets to my car!!!

hmmmm...is it illegal to drive with house shoes on? Just wondering.

TIA

Definitely illegal in the UK.

From everything I have found, driving barefoot is not illegal in the UK. Were you told this or do you have the specific law?

It's an urban legend created by moms! :rotfl:

So far I have only gotten ONE speeding ticket. I was 17 and I was coming home from the beach in Treasure Island, FL. I was wearing a swimsuit - no shoes. I had to get out of the car to get my driver's license out of the hatchback, so the officer KNEW I wasn't wearing shoes. He never mentioned it so it can't be that big of a deal. But I specifically remember my mother telling me it was illegal!

According to my mother, yes. And so is swimming after a meal, eating grapes in the grocery store, and sitting too close to the television. :rotfl:

I used to be the world's worst about driving barefoot when I was a teenager..I was a lifeguard in the summer and never wore shoes.

Oh man so I wasn't the rebel I thought I was when I took off my shoes because I sure couldn't drive with heels on. Darn. :)

I distinctly remember my mother telling me driving without shoes on was illegal too but apparently according to the list it isnt. LOL must be a mom thing. About a week ago I had to rush back to our church at night so that ds could retrieve his backpack that he left there during the kids biblestudy. Dh and I were arguing about who was going to go back and I just jumped in the car, in my pajamas and bare feet and ran ds over there. I was dying the whole time hoping I wouldnt get pulled over. I could just invision me having to get out of the car in my jammies and bare feet. LOL!!!

I got pulled over in New Orleans when I was in high school. I was wearing bear slippers at the time. The cop asked me if I was sure I could drive in them. I said it was better than the heels I had (which we later found out was the wrong size due to a dying mishap at Payless!).

So instead of bare feet--I had bear feet. I didn't get a ticket for that.

Well I never heard it was illegal in NY and I am glad it turns out it is NOT... Idrive barefoot all summer long. When I wear flip flops I don't like to drive with them so I kick them off and drive barefoot.

I had to take traffic school years back and the instructor specifically addressed this law and said it was illegal to drive barefoot, but then again what did she know, she was a B-Movie actress and traffic school instruction paid the bills. She screamed pretty good though.
