I hear holding stool is really bad for you--it can cause you to become consipated and can cause all sorts of nasty problems in your nether regions. Part of the problems is that as you hold it, more and more water is absorbed out of it which makes it dry and hard to pass.
As for the other, I hear it's a habit for women, because going flushes out the tract and helps clear out bacteria, preventing UTIs and the such.
