Is it harder to visit other resorts for eating, shopping, checking them out?

I will be staying at the Dolphin this year. As a much younger kid, I was able to go with my family to pretty much every resort whenever we wanted. (At least when we stayed at a Disney-owned resort.)

I would like to be able to do this now, and use some of my time to help decide where I would like to stay in future vacations. You can tell much more by actually visiting the place than by looking in the books and internet.

1) Has 9/11 affected accessibility?
2) Since the Dolphin is not 100% a Disney Resort, will I have the same access as others?

Thanks to all who reply!

Hey, we do this all the time! We usually schedule dinner at one of the resorts, arrive early, walk around, eat, check out their gift shop, and walk around some more!

Sure! Visit all you like.. even without make in meal reservations... we do this all the time.

Best best is to take the Disney Transportation to any of the resorts... then you can come and go as you please.

The only time I have felt uncomfortable is when we were taking a cab and the guard stopped us to ask us why we were coming in... made me feel guilty for some reason! lol

I love to check out the other resorts and soak up the atmosphere.

We do this too - I love looking at the other resorts and seeing where we'll stay next trip. If you have your own car you will have a resort parking pass for the length of your stay. Not sure if they have a pass that is good for free parking at the parks... If they do, you should be able to just show this to the guard at the resort that you are visiting, you'll be allowed to park in the lot of the resort you are visiting.

If you don't have a car, you can visit BW, YC/BC and Swan right from your own resort. If you go to MK, you can hop on the monorail to see CR, Poly and GF and take a boat over to WL and FW. You used to be able to take a boat from the Marketplace over to FQ and POR, but with the closings not sure about that one now. You'll need to use a bus to see the other resorts.

Resort-hopping is one of our favourite activities. Post 9/11 you are asked for photo ID if you arrive by car, but other than that there are no restrictions. Just tell the guard you are visiting to check out the resort and you will be given a 3 hour parking permit.

Some of the best restaurants and sites can be found at the resorts! We resort hop all the time. Especially traveling to AKL or the Poly for dinner...unless we're already staying there of course!

We love taking Disney transport from one local to another. By bus then mono the boat, always lots of fun!

Resort hopping is one of our favorite things to do, & a big reason we return to WDW every year. We always use Disney transportation, allowing plenty of time to get to the resort restaurant if we have a PS.
