Is it considered weird to wear a tshirt in the pool?

I have this really weird question.

My son has a huge scar down the front of his chest from surgery that he's really self conscious about. It doesn't bother me, but it bothers him. It seems to bother him more now that he's a teen. He says people always stare at it

I was hoping if the weather was good on our Nov trip that he'd go swimming, but he said not unless he can wear a tshirt.

Is it weird for a guy to wear a tshirt in the pool?

Not to me. I wear a UV shirt in our local pool all the time, as do several other gentlemen. Note that a cotton shirt will hold more water than a poly T and might be a bit less comfortable.

Some boys do... especially ones a little overweight. I wouldn't think twice if I saw it.

But they have new shirts that are called Rashguards, that are made of the same material as girl bathing suits, that either sex can wear that are better for swimming in as they won't be as heavy/uncomfortable, but will still keep the sun off, etc. They would even be less inconspicuous.

Maybe get him one of those?

My DH won't go into the pool without a shirt, and we have a UV shirt for him. My son varies. I have rash guards for him and sometimes he wears them, sometimes he doesn't. Wouldn't think twice about it. The rashguards are great.

No it is not weird. If I were you though, I would buy a "rash guard" swim shirt (google it if you're not sure) instead of using a T-shirt since it doesn't hold the water the same way a cotton T-shirt does. My boys (12, 15) wear them because they are good for UV and you don't need to put sunscreen on your back and stomach. They are available at lots of places.:)

I had no idea about these shirts, but I'm going to find some online and show them to DS.

This is awesome. I just thought about how heavy a cotton tshirt would be when soaked.

I think he's going to be thrilled.

:lovestruc You guys are great!!

There is a brand called Under Amour. They sell surfer shirts and the shorts that go with them. My DN wears one, and loves it. They are great at the pool and beach. They are in style with the teen guys , they dry quick . Great for land and sea. Have a great trip . We will also be there in Nov. BCV.:thumbsup2

Also the rashguard is "cool", the tee not so much :). That's important for a teen

My boys always wear their swim shirts.

The UnderArmour and QuikSilver rash guards seem nice. We just bought Coolibar ones for DH and DS. They aren't cheap, but are VERY well made and not covered with logos. (The last is important to us, but probably not to everyone...!)

Not weird, imo. My 8 yo DS likes to wear a rash guard to swim. I like the Lands End ones and they are on sale now too. You could also do any of the under armor tops, even if they are not specifically for the pool since they are water resistant and dry quickly.

My kids are fair skinned and we live at the beach; they always wear their rashguards. I actually just got DS14 (men's) one at BJ's on clearance for $14.99.

People wear those Nike/Under Armour t-shirts at waterparks/pools all the time, once they get wet they dry off much faster than cotton shirts.

Also chiming in about the rash guard.... my DH wore one every day @ the pool when we were there last month :thumbsup2

I also got both my girls coordinating ones to go with their Land's End tankinis so there was less skin to have to sunblock! :thumbsup2

My son always wears a rash guard. He's very white and even with 50+ sunblock on he burns like crazy. I also used to have him wear it because he was so skinny his little ribs stuck out Now he's put on weight and his belly hangs out. LOL

We were at both water parks last week, and the pool at CBR and both boys and men were wearing them.

I agree with pp's - my teenage son prefers to wear one. We use sports or swim shirts that are better in the water and dry quickly when he gets out.

Sports Authority was having a really good sale on their swimwear recently - I picked up a couple of swim shirts for my son. Lots of boys at our pool wear them!
