Is it better to buy add on points through Disney new?

It depends on your situation. One consideration may be if you are in need of Disney financing, or are you a cash customer?

You can save money on a resale. If you need to get into the system quickly, you'd be better served buying directly from the Mouse.

Or should I buy resale points?

I think it depends on how many points you're adding. Lower point contracts sell for more through resale. By the time you add in closing costs (if you pay them), the savings isn't nearly as great or is sometimes more than buying direct.

Decide on how many points and what resort. If the amount is nominal, I'd purchase through Dis to avoid having to go through ROFR. Plus, you'd have access to your points almost immediately. In case you're interested, you have to purchase a minimum of 50 points in order to finance.

Lastly, if you do decide to purchase resale, Dis will almost always give you current UY points plus last year's points. So, for example, we have an Aug UY. If I added on now, I would get Aug 07 points, plus all 08 points. Some contracts out on the boards are stripped, so they won't come with any 08 points. Some will have 08 points, and if you look carefully, some will have all 07 and even possibly some banked 06 points. When we bought one of our SSR contracts, it had all 05 points banked, all 06 points and all 07 points coming, and we purchased in 07. That was actually better than Dis's offer.

Good luck!:thumbsup2

If you are adding a small number of points, it could be difficult to get your same use year and desired resort plus you will have to pay closing costs. Then of course, you have to go through ROFR and HOPE you manage to get those points after several months of process. If you buy direct from Disney, there will be no closing costs, and you will have access to the points as soon as you put something down on them. On the other hand, if you are buying a larger number of points equivalent to a whole contract, then it might make sense to go the resale route where you will have closing costs, but not likely to be much more than they would be for a small contract, and the price per point could be low enough to counteract the cost of the closing fees.
