Is it best to buy all the points you want up front?

My fiance and I have determined that 500 points will probably be best for us, however I notice that the vast majority of people seem to buy only 150 points at a time. Is there a benefit to starting small and adding on? We thougt it would be best to have the points at the same resort and all available at the same date so we that we don't have to keep track of different timelines. We were planning on buying 500 points all at once directly from DVC at SSR but now I'm wondering if it might be better to buy smaller increments resale. Any suggestions??

I would think that if you could afford all 500 at once, go for it. I think most people buy smaller contracts thinking it will be enough, then find they would like to go more often. Or their family size changes, and then they realize their accommodation size must change, which requires more points, etc. And some people just wait until they can financially afford more points. If you can do it, again, I say go for it. You can never have enough points. Good luck!

In the event you decided to sell your contract it is very difficult to get rid of such a large one. That and the fact that 150 is the minimum for an original purchase is why you see 150 point contracts.

What you can do is buy the 150 point contract and at the same time buy several smaller ones to go along with it. If you are buying through Disney you will have the same use year. Also they are running a promotion for current owners that gives a free vacation or 2 AP's for an add on of 130 points. Buying 150 up front and adding on the others may give you the option to do this.

Good luck with your decision,
Lori

If you are sure you want 500 points you could buy it all from Disney but I'd split it into at least two contracts if not three...one with 100 and two of 200. That way if you want to sell some later you'll be able to find a buyer much more easily than with a 500 point contract. Take a look at the resale sites to see what I mean. 500 point resales take a while to unload.

At the very least, split those contracts into as many increments of 150 as you can. If you buy one 500-pt contract, it can never be subdivided. If 10 or 20 years from now you were to discover that you aren't using the 500 points, your only option would be to sell that entire contract and buy a smaller one. It can take a while to find a buyer for a contract that big, and the financial terms aren't always the best.

If you buy contracts of 150-150-200, you could sell off any of those contracts individually, and keep the ones you want.

You may also consider the advantage of having points with different Home resorts. With that many points, would you ever want to book a Grand Villa at Old Key West? If so, the only way to guarantee that room is to book it very close to the 11-month window. If memory serves, there are only 26 GVs at OKW.

Also, having some points at one of the Epcot resorts (BWV, BCV) may be useful.

For what it's worth, if it were me, I'd split those points between SSR (for the 50 years), OKW (for the Grand Villas) and BWV (for the BW View, GVs and lower-point Standard View rooms.)

I agree - buy 150 and then add-on 130 twice if you want SSR. You'll get 4 free AP's and contracts will be easier to sell if need be. A lot of folks think buy now before further price increases are in place. However, DVC is selling for less now than earlier this year (with current incentives). I would suggest that the average ownership is 200-250 points. If it were me, I'd buy resale and save $.

If money is not an issue and you can afford 500 points - I'd say go for it as the cost will only increase as time goes on. Many people would probably suggest that you purchase it in a few smaller contracts, instead of one large one in case you ever want to sell part of your contract. The advantage of going resale is that you can have a different home resort and possibly save some money. But purchasing through Disney is quick and easy and worth the extra money to some people. Good luck with your decision.

you can also do an add on at a different resort.

buy 150 points at SSR - then after you decide that it is what you want and you think DVC is the best thing you have brought in a long while - then go look at the Epcot area - find a resale or do an add on through DVC.

remember that 2054 is the final date of SSR - the other DVC resorts are 2042.

I kept hoping for a Cont DVC. - DVC kepts saying that there will be a monrail DVC resort - save some money for that - I just hope it is in my lifetime....
