Is getting walked to a higher-level hotel ever a bad thing

If it's an upgrade, refusing it could be an option. If it's being offered because there is no room available at the original resort for whatever reason, you may not have the option of refusing it (although you could probably ask to go to a different resort than the one offered).
That is what I would do.

AKL is about twice as far by road (not so far as the crow flies) than POR.
When booking our stay I compared resorts based on estimated bus times and distance from the parks.

Are you talking about going to MK? Google maps has POR as 9 minutes from resort to the parking lot at TTC and AKL as 15 minutes. So in your whole day, that's 12 more minutes in the car, which really isn't that much.

We were booked for a Nemo suite at AOA in 2014. When we checked in, they told us we were the family of the day and were being upgraded to an SSR (1br I think). We chose AOA based on theming and the food court having lots of fresh option so we said no. It took them some time to find us our suite but they did!

Family of the day? Sneaky.

Yeah I don't think I'd want to move either. We are paying $300 a night for a Cars room with three beds and two bathrooms. Unless they can reproduce that, I'm not leaving for a deluxe. My kids cannot sleep together or with us at all and I need to go to the bathroom in peace. This is a vacation. It shouldn't be work.

Two years ago we were booked with free dining at All Star Sports over thanksgiving week. They didn't have any connecting rooms left so offered to move us to rooms in the little mermaid section at AOA. We took it in a heartbeat!

I'm not picky, if Disney was going to foot the bill for me to upgrade to another resort I'd do it. But, if I was staying at one of the values or moderates and was offered something else, I'd try to get them to laterally move me (from like POP to one of the All-Stars) and put a credit on my account. Free meals and trinkets would probably be more worthwhile to me then the experience of staying at OKW/Saratoga. I could buy a D&B for my Mom.
