Ugh, it was all live. I think I am probably the only person in the known universe who absolutely hated the show. I say, BRING BACK TARZAN! I love the music from Tarzan (mostly because Phil Collins is awesome ) and about had a melt-down when I found out it was being replaced. I think we have enough Nemo.
Oh don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show and I am familiar with theatrical casting traditions, but when my kids kept asking me why Nemo is a girl, it was distracting.
This is my guess. Nemo is portrayed by an adult female because they cannot hire an actual child (child labor laws are very strict and the schedule for this show is pretty tough for that part) and it's rather difficult to find a grown man who can sing in the voice of a child.
I understand the reasoning behind using a female for Nemo, but I personally would rather hear a male voice even if it didn't sound like a child. Otherwise I thought the show was very neat and unique. I really liked how the puppets they use in the show reminded me of many of the parade floats at AK - nice touch.
A woman's voice is much more suited to that of a young child (boy or girl) and, since its not possible to cast a "real" child for various reasons, a woman is quite often chosen for the role.
It requires a bit of explanation for children and those new to the practice, and a greater "willing suspension of disbelief" (for everyone) but that's what theater is all about, anyway.
Good point! That does kind of make the rest of it irrelevant. I guess it just bugged me a little bit not only because she sounded so feminine, but they also didn't do much to make her look boyish. You could clearly see her girly-parts beneath the costume, and we were WAYYY up in the back!!
Of course none of this was more distracting that the elderly woman who collapsed on the stairs next to me and the cast members who thought she was dying. (She was just dehydrated.) Scared the bejeepers of me and my DD8.
It'll be interesting to see if the "girl" Nemo bothers me again next time. Maybe with less outside distraction and knowing what to expect, I won't notice the incongruity as much.
