Is eating raw meat really a thing in Wisconsin?

No, tartar is alive & well in our home...my husband enjoys that (beef & venison) , as well as tuna, raw.
And the odd oyster.

I've heard of all this, but I was thinking it didn't necessarily seem that being adventurous with undercooked (well raw) meat was a thing anywhere in the midwest.

In Japan they'll eat raw beef in a way similar to sushi. I know some Europeans who commented when I noted that horse meat was illegal in California. One said that he loved raw horse meat - sliced thin. OTOH - he said he'd never eat raw oysters again after he got sick once. He said he literally passed out.

Carpaccio is so very yum, first time I had it was at WDW. I wouldn't touch anything that could land me in a hospital right now though including sushi, oysters or anything else that could go wrong so the Wisconsin warning seems reasonable.

This thread made me gag at the memory. I am originally from central Wisconsin. When I was a child, my dad worked every Saturday until 2pm...he would then come home, grab a slice of rye bread, slather raw ground beef on it and top it with raw white onion slices. To this day, I can remember the smell. Pretty sure he hasn’t had one, though, in about 20 years now. So yes, definitely a thing...that I would love to forget! He called it wildcat.

Yes. Called Tiger meat. It's huge on the east side of Wisconsin. I've never tried it, but know plenty of people who love it...

I grew up in Oregon and we frequently ate steak tartare. I would never use store bought ground beef--you have to chop it yourself. But it's delicious, and not that weird to me.

Yes. My family is from Milwaukee and yep, traditional part of Christmas Eve (plus other times, but definitely on Christmas Eve). Rye bread, freshly ground beef (not buying from some random package in the grocery store), salt, pepper. My Dad likes a little raw onion as well.

carpaccio is amazing ❤️ I also do not think it’s counted as raw meat.

Yup! I'm in WI and that was a big thing with the guys I used to be on a fire department with on meeting nights.

When I grew up in Calif in the 60's and 70's I'd think nothing of grabbing a bit of raw hamburger and having a bite before cooking it. There is no way I'd do that now though.

I'm from the east side of Wisconsin and I've never heard such a thing. :crazy2:
I'll ask my mom about it in the morning.

That sounds awful! I can’t even stand the smell of raw beef.
I’m with you! I can’t stand the smell, so couldn’t imagine eating it. My burgers have to be well done.

I know it’s because it’s something that isn’t normal for me, but the entire idea turns my stomach.
