Is DVC worth my travel style

A few questions to the more traveled of this site. i am seriously considering purchase into the DVC but have some major issues. After reviewing a small list of postings on the site Im getting the felling that this is geared more towards, (sounds ignorantly obvious as i type) the value being in disney resorts as opposed to the other resort options. I love disney but have no intention of travel to disney only. We go on average 2 vacations a year and tend to travel to a different all inclusive Caribe locale eaach time and make disney trips once every 3 to 4 years.
I guess Ive got a lil of my own answer but need to hear it from someone who maybe travels outside of the disney resorts with the DVC and get thier feedback. We would prob start with about 210 points and feel it out from there if we were to jump in. thanks again

I would buy a small resale contract 50-75 points. Using banking and borrowing, every 3rd year you could go on a 150-225 point vacation to Disney World. If you decide you want to make more frequent trips to Disney or stay in larger accommodations, you can always add on another small contract. If you want to travel on timeshares elsewhere, there's cheaper timeshares you can get to get more bang for your buck for. DVC only stretches your money among Disney properties. Of course to some of us, the nostalgia of owning Disney and hearing Welcome Home are a part of why we buy.

I would not buy as you've stated. If you can narrow i down to at least once every 3 years at some DVC resort or another then a small contract might be advantageous. I'd suggest renting at least once and seeing how it fits for you.

I would say that once every 3 or 4 years doesn't warrant a DVC interest....

Even if you get a "small" resale contract.....you would still probably be paying upwards of 1000 dollars of maintenance fees in between each stay......which will continue to go up and would be a nice chunk of the cost of your stay already....

I wouldn't purchase unless you planned to go to WDW with more regularity.....it is the best value for your DVC points bar none

I agree.

I would add that if you don't go every third year and if your vacation doesn't "cost" exactly 3 times the amount in your contract, you will end up forfeiting some of your points.

Suggest you look into another timeshare - one that you could use to trade into DVC. If you do your homework (suggest starting on www.tug2.net) and buy a good trader, and have flexible vacation dates, you could trade into one of the DVC resorts when you visit WDW.

Good luck.

I live in London and DVC once every 3 years works for us, as we too like to travel elsewhere. We had 230 points which suited our needs on a bank/use/borrow 3 year cycle. I say had because I have just added on a further 103 points at BLT :) . Many DVC members this side of the Atlantic look to the 3 year use model, because our transport costs to Florida are typically higher than US Members, so we tend to travel less regularly but for longer periods (2-weeks being the norm). (Plus we like to vacation in Europe, and elsewhere too.)

Wow, wasnt expecting response so soon. Let me start by saying you guys are awsome, i've posted questions on some other travel sites and was lucky to get this many responses in a week let alone 10 hours. Thanks for the advise and quick response. If this is the care that members give its hard not to give the DVC a second and third look. Also wasnt trying to down play the disney experience, I could go time and time again but want to see the rest of the world before I get "Home". Enjoy your trips, lives and families.

Besides WDW, DVC has resorts at Vero Beach and Hilton Head with a resort due to open at Disneyland and HI in the next couple of years. That may give you some variety within the system enough to make it workable for you. IMO, you need to make sure the nuts and bolts work for you. Don't let our helpfulness sway you unless the program truly makes sense for you otherwise. Spend some time, maybe rent from a member. What ever you decide you'll be better off because you got the facts and investigated the options. Good luck.
