Is dry ice available at Publix?

I thought that might help us....to freeze our water bottles to start the day.

I highly doubt it. You usually have to buy it directly from a dry ice company as it's frozen carbon dioxide. I've never seen it in any store. It's also not easy to deal with. It will take the skin right off of your hands if you handle it.

I work in our local grocery store and we sell it....at first I was suprised by that--and now we all swear by it.!! I just wonder if I can pack it on my suitcase and travel with it. I will have to check with the airlines.

It is hard to handle but we do it with gloves and patience!!

I've seen it at some Publix's but not all of them. If they have it, it's usually near the frozen pizza. It's probably best to call the store you plan to visit and ask them.

I just checked the list of what's not approved on planes from page 2 on the Transportation board, and I didn't see it specifically listed, but I'd imagine that it would not be allowed on a plane. Definitely call, just to make sure. I know that our local Publix used to have it at Halloween, but I don't know about the rest of the year. Why not just bring a cooler, and use the ice machine at your hotel to keep the drinks cold? It just seems as though dry ice would be a pain in the neck to deal with! We rented a car when we went in April, and we drove to Publix, bought a cheap styrofoam cooler, water, soft drinks, snacks, etc. I forgot to buy plastic cups, but it made the one week stay at the CR a bit cheaper in terms of snacks and drinks!

Our publix in TN has dry ice all the time! Not that this helps you but I bet the publix there do too, I would just call and ask.

I just thought if I froze the water bottles then carried them into the parks and put them in a cooler and a locker then we could have a cold treat as we change parks each day. We are staying at the values so I do not have access to a freezer...so I figured the dry ice is the next best option. With 7 kids and us--each time I say yes to soda or a bottled water it will be $$$ !!! I know we can get free drinks at counter places yet I feel that is a pain.
I will try publix when I get there...if not, I will have to figure something else out. Thanks!!

It is available at our local publix in Melbourne.

You can always go to publix.com locate the store you would be purchasing it from and call to double check.

I was intrigued by this thread, 'cause I didn't know that anybody could buy dry ice. I even checked on my airline's website, not that I have plans to take any.

Guess what? It IS listed and it IS accepted. So be sure to check YOUR airline's website, too.

Yes, dry ice is extremely dangerous and should NOT be used around kids!

However, you can chill your water down in one of 2 ways.

1) put it in a cooler full of ice water over night. Add a bunch of salt to the ice water in the cooler; this lowers the freezing temp temperature of the water and helps it to cool the water bottles that you immerse in it. They will be ICE cold by morning, and maybe even frozen.

2) the heat will make that frozen water melt and warm up very quickly. But if you have a water bottle with a wide mouth, you can refill it with fresh ice for free from any counter service or sit-down restaurant, or any drink cart, then fill it with more water from a drinking fountain. I use this technique with my Brita Fill and Go bottle and it works very well, since I drink way more than one bottle of water per day.

Does the dry ice keep things colder? I want to take a cooler of meat to Hawaii with us and wondered about getting some, the regular ice will surely melt a lot on that long flight. I will check our airline too about the ability to take it on the plane.

I remember leaving some dry ice in a Playmate cooler overnight in my garage one Halloween, and in the morning, it had eaten a hole through the cooler! since then, I'm a little afraid of it!

Our Publix in PCB, FL carries it as well. We used it at Halloween one year and had no problems. It was a big hit in the cauldrin.

Would it be worth renting a fridge for your stay? I know it's $10/day, but you can sure get a lot of things in that little fridge to save more than you pay for the fridge. You can even turn it up cold enough that it will act like a little freezer. Besides putting in water, you can (if you don't turn it up too cold) some fruit, cold meat, etc., and more than make up the difference by having a few picnic meals.

Dry ice does not melt into liquid like ice made from water. It evaporates slowly so it lasts longer. The reason it will take your skin off is that it is colder and adheres immediately to the skin. Companies ship frozen food items in dry ice all the time.
