Is Disney the antithesis of Christianity?

If Disney is so anti-Christian then how come I see some people wearing Disney stuff to my church? There's especially one lady who loves Tinkerbelle and wears Tink watches and sweat jackets!

Does she also boycott everything Disney owns- like ESPN, Miramax films, Lifetime TV, the whole ABC network, etc?

I was going to mention something like this on my other post but got called away from the puter.
I lived in Texas for awhile and my older DD(then 13) attended a youth group at a church there. They had a wonderful program for the teens, live bands, fed them free pizza or hot dogs every week, lots of working-together type games, in general a safe well supervised non-denominational place for the kids to spend an evening at. I normally did not chaperone but was asked to one nite. Didn't have to do much just be a body , make sure no one was doing anything not age appropriate-that kind of thing.
I was chatting with another mom and we got talking about the gangs and gang symbols and how her son got kicked off the school bus because of a haircut(he was not in a gang-just a style of haircut the school said symbolized a gang-talk about profiling) She said that one gang in the city had a Disney character as a mascot/logo/symbol and went on to say how her family was boycotting Disney, including movies because of the gay days thing. And of course being the smart butt I am I had to ask her if they watched ABC network. When she told me yes they loved "program whatever" and never missed it. HEHEHE I just loved informing her that Disney owns ABC and quite a few other things that I am sure she partakes of. I also told her if she was going to boycott something then she might want to do a little research instead of just going by whatever she was told to do by her church since they seemed to be misinformed on a few things.
UMMM...she couldnt get away from me fast enuf.:lmao: No excuses, she just kinda walked away with an odd look on her face. It was pretty funny. She musta thot I was the devil himself:lmao: Dont you love being right about things?

Gay Days is not an official Disney event. What do these people want---all gays to be told not to go to Disney and turned away at the gates? America is not the Christian fundamentalist version of Iran.

That is sadly what some people do want. I would be curious about how exactly they could tell who is and isn't gay. Obviously some people do fit physical stereotypes, but most don't so you can't tell just by looking. Maybe it's a voluntary thing and all gay people just flash their rainbow ID cards? If extremists want to avoid Disney then I think we are all better off if they continue to stay away. OT - Didn't the Bakkers have an amusement park back before all hell broke loose?

ETA: about the Gay Days. There are gay people everywhere. Is your co-worker going to stop going to the grocery store because they allow gay people to shop there?

I love this post!!!!!!! Great response!!!!!

Yes, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker did have a modest theme park called Heritage USA. It was centered around a time share program that was deemed crooked and a key reason for their downfall.

The Bakkers are evangelical Christians, but not of the same ilk as Pat Robertson, Falwell, etc. Tammy Faye is a strong supporter of gays and lesbians (even appearing at Gay pride festivals) and she and Jim have publicly accused Jerry Falwell of being a scheming charlatan.

I think that Jim and Tammy Faye are nice people, but kooks.

I'm a huge anti-Christian, and don't really care about the whole gay thing. yet Disney doesn't pay for our AP renewals or offer us resort rates below the FL resident prices.

pot/kettle

There's a whole group of people who think like this. What do I think? I don't care. The fewer nutjobs at Disney, the better IMO. I agree with the posters that said you won't change their minds though. So I wouldn't even argue with them.

My goodness, I haven't read the
whole thread yet, but this is just
Maaahvelous!! What a great comeback!!:lmao:

How fabulous!!!
Right on with the right on!!

I am with the group that says let them stay away. There will always be people you can't reason with. They know everything and no one is going to change their minds. Disney movies have always been about good over evil. If they weren't then the evil stepsister would be married to Prince Charming instead of Cinderella. Poor Harry Potter too. Poor guy is always trying to triumph over evil. If he is evil too who is he trying to.......oh, nevermind you get the picture. :headache:

LOL...thanks..I love putting ppl in their place when they get all "holier then thou" on me. That was not a religious put down..I just cant remember the word you use to say it.:goodvibes

a lot of disney moives and such, have a theme that isnt God created the univers, and the gay day rubs more salt in the wound. But if you think Disney is evil your nutty. Nothing we buy or watch is in complete agreement with our world views (what ever they are)

Most Disney films are based on older popular works that were not God-centric. That does not mean that the writers or storytellers were atheists, it's just that they did not incorporate God into everything that they did. The success and longevity of those works of fantasy is evidence that there was an audience for secular culture in centuries past.

For a small group of misguided fundamentalists, evidence of a secular aspect to popular culture that is centuries old is profoundly threatening. They argue that we must look to the past to reclaim our values, but secularism existed, albeit to a lesser extent than today, in that much heralded past.

It reminds me of fundamentalists who claim that America is "one nation under God" because that is what is said in the Pledge of Allegiance and they cite that as proof of the founding fathers' intent not realizing that those words were added in the 1950s long after the pledge was written. Religion was historically not at the core of every human endeavor and that is threatening to a small group of radicals.

Hey, there's an idea. Make them sew rainbows on their sleeves.
I agree, let the bigots stay away. I don't want my vacation ruined by overhearing their hate talk.

For some reason this reminds me of years ago when I first came to the Dis , there was someone like this. An easily influenced lady was asking ppl in the trip board what in Mk wasn't "evil" so she could convince herself and family to go. :confused3

Ah yes, my first official flaming. I remember it well. ;)

Actually, my question was wildly misunderstood, and if I had it to do all over again, I would phrase it less controversally, or not ask it at all.

For the record, I do not think Disney is the antithesis of Christianity. I do think there are some scary or supernatural elements that can make people who are unfamiliar with the attractions unsure if they should participate in them.

For those wondering how it all turned out:

I still haven't seen Fantasmic with my children, b/c I can't tell from reading the guide books if it would scare the life out of them.

I did end up trying Haunted Mansion after all even though I didn't think I would....my kids were fine with it but it did scare me!

I saw Snow White in DL a year later with dh only and we realized it also would have been too much for our kids, so we're glad we didn't try that one either.

Overall, we had a fantastic time, went back the following summer and will be making more trips.

:rotfl: Yep, joining Tinky Winky from the Teletubbies, Spongebob, and whom else is so evil, that we allow our children to view and or soak it up...I know, I know, ELMO!:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I don't know about Disney or Spongebob being evil, but I do think that the teletubbies are the spawn on the Devil himself. All copies of their horrific show should be taken off the air and burned. That show is as bad as they come. If you were the enemy and needed vital information from me, no standard torture techniques would be needed. Just tie me to a chair and play that show for about 8 hours straight and I'll sing like a bird.

As a late Christmas gift to all the liberal DIS posters I found an image you might find funny. Enjoy!

Wow, sponsoring Night of Joy AND the Candlelight Processional, while not sponsoring Gay Days must mean Disney hates Christians.

Out of curiousity (way off topic here) was Walt a Christian?

Heh. I read the thread you posted, and sorry, I don't think that was the tread I was refering to. The thread I remember (I don't think I posted on it), was refering to someone who's husband said WDW was evil, and she wanted to know what parts were "evil" and what to avoid.

Also, it might have been on the "hello' boards or something too.. I couldn't find the thread.. I think it might have been locked and errased.

I don't really "get" what Disney is supposed to do about gay days anyway. Have the CMs stand at the turnstiles and ask, "excuse me, are you gay? what about you sir? You look a little gay. are you sure you aren't gay? No gays in here, at Christian Disney World, per orders of Michael Eisner." It's as ridiculous as it sounds. I go to church every Sunday, (reminds me, I gotta get to bed), and I am so sad by these kooky "Christians." I think they have lost the point of what Christ was about. It certainly wasn't all this "holier than thou" stuff.

And HARRY POTTER!!! The whole point of the books are the message that it is not always is easy to do what is right. To stand up for good. Poor Harry, I can't imagine a better message for kids to read!!
