Is Dinosaur a good thing to ride once? And what's with it's reputation?

Wow I got some really polarizing answers. From adults huddled up scared to little kids jumping in joy (and people having their backs thrown out)... I guess of course everyone experiences things differently. I got in ANOTHER debate last night with my daughter over this ride. I am going to 100% ride it alone myself but she already said I will probably be terrified and won't admit it... lol

I'll repeat what others have said, it's not a bad ride, but jerky. My 13 year old daughter liked it well enough, but at one point I hit the back of my head pretty hard, so it wasn't going to be a repeat for me.

I know it is fully ridiculous that I find this ride scary, but I do. I say it as a joke "Yeah, I'm scared of the fake dinosaurs", but during the ride, my body reacts like I really am in a dangerous situation, even though I know it's all pretend. My heartrate jumps up, I'm constantly flinching away from the jump scares, I become very tense, and in spite of consciously knowing better, it still feels like I'm experiencing a real threat.

There are a lot of elements that combine to make it highly disorienting - people have mentioned the jerkiness, and that's part of it, especially combined with the fact that the grab bars are just a bit too far away for me (maybe I just have short arms), so I end up without anything to really hold on to to steady myself. In addition to that, it's just SO loud.

Personally, I've pretty much sworn off any more rides on it at this point (although I have been on it probably close to a dozen times over the years, so I've given myself more than enough chances to get used to it and I still have the same reaction every time). If I ever did somehow let anyone talk me into riding again, I would have to at least try using with earplugs and see if that would make it less anxiety-inducing for me. (But the last time I did let a friend convince me to ride, we ended up getting stuck on the hill right at the end when the ride shut down and we were the last ones to be evacuated because we were at such a steep incline that they had to take extra time with us, so we were trapped right underneath that final dino for half an hour or so - just proved that I should have trusted my gut and waited for my friends outside. :P )

All that said, I wouldn't ever tell someone not to ride if they thought it sounded fun! It is honestly a good ride (albeit in need of a few updates) and lots of people love it. On paper, it's something I should love, too, and, like I said, I find it ridiculous that it scares me, but it just does. :confused3

I found it a little scary my first ride - just some jump moments but I dislike the jump out at you stuff it is just not my thing. It has been tamed down since opening day as I think I only slightly flinched once on my last ride. I don't ride it often because my back has trouble with the motion - if you have been to DL it moves like Indiana Jones there. I do however ride that as I'm willing to take the jarring for the really cool ride - I don't find Dinosaur! worth the pains.

As others have said, it can be scary for a young child, but the BIG rub is how REALLY jarring it is. Like, physically rough. I have been on it a few times but haven't been on it is a decade now. My family often skips it entirely. My 13yo does because he hates how rough it is.

Am I the only one that has never seen any "jump scares" on this ride? Like, I hate those in scary movies, so I would definitely notice, but I have never experienced that on this ride. Maybe I can just see the dinosaurs coming so it doesn't scare me.

You are not the only one. I just rode this three weeks ago, and I didn't experience any jump scares. It's like off-roading through a dinosaur museum.

My girlfriend experiences the opposite of many of you - she has back problems and this ride fixes them. :D
I (We) like it. I don't recall any jump scares. Seems like I can easily anticipate when a dino is going to appear.

I think it’s fun in a cheesy way. I would ride it more if the ride wasn’t so jerky and painful with the back of the seat slamming into my back. Kind of a classic. But just not worth the pain. I wish the bumps weren’t so harsh.
My son was terrified when he was 5, it is so loud. And dark. After that trip it wasn’t a big deal. I wish it was IJ themed at WDW too! Love IJ!!!

I don't think it is scary at all. You are surprised at one part which could cause a moment of shock but that isn't the same as actual fear to me.

I think it is a ride worth doing and we hit it every time we are in the park. Try it and find out. If you think your child could be scared but you haven't ridden it personally ride solo. As a parent you'll know if it is something your child can handle better than the Internet will.

I have noticed that with all dark rides, the experience of them can be quite different depending on the amount of light outside because of the way your eyes adjust--you see a lot more if it is dark outside (cloudy or nighttime) and your eyes are adjusted to low light, and see more darkness/less detail if it is sunny out and your eyes are accustomed to bright light. For example. I prefer to ride 7DMT at night because I see the (gorgeous) details in the dwarves mine so much more clearly, whereas in the day a lot of it fades into shadows and just looks dark.

For Dinosaur, the first time I rode it was a night, and it felt rather silly and not at all scary--you could see all the dinosaurs coming miles away, and with clearer sight could see all their imperfections, so the animatronics looked very fake. The second time I rode it was in daytime, and it was genuinely scary. It was pitch black and dinosaurs appeared inches away from me out of nowhere and looked very creepy. I ended up closing my eyes near the end because it was making me so uncomfortable and I just didn't want to see it any more. And I don't mind seeing all of the jurassic world movies--there was just something about that darkness with the fangs and the blood that was deeply unpleasant.

And as others have said, not fun getting jerked around so roughly. Definitely planning to sit it out on future trips to AK.

So funny that people are talking about this. It's my favorite ride at AK.

It hits all of my requirements. Dark ride, check! Animatronics, check! Goofy story arc, also check! No silly IP tie-ins. (Why make art when you can just buy it? 😜 ) The bumps work out my middle-aged lower back ache too, definite plus!

It does tie in to IP, it's just an IP nobody remembers. 😄

While I could be wrong, I don't think I have ever ridden Dinosaur at night, so not sure that plays a factor for me.

For DH & I, it was one and done - no, not scary at all, except maybe for littles. It was ridiculously jerky - absolutely no reason to make that type ride jerk your neck and back like it does.

It will always have a fond place in my heart due to it was the only thing remotely like a thrill ride when AK first opened; there was basically the safari, the 3d movie, and the original Countdown to Extinction.

The only thing someone should be terrified about of is if they will have lasting neck and back problems. Insanely “scary” jerky.

Can’t stand the ride.

Yes! We don’t have that ride in DL so it was truly new to us on our first trip to WDW. We had no expectations and had a few surprises. When I think of the ride I picture that large TRex head coming down towards my face. I know it’s not real, but....

My daughter rode this for the first time in 2019 when she was 6. She loves dinosaurs and loved the ride. Like people said, it’s jerky! We rode it again last Sept and my husbands backpack fell out of the vehicle.
Ha, we went on it the weekend in March right before WDW closed and got stuck waiting almost an hour while they located someone's fallen backpack. Anyway, we love this ride! One of my daughters was obsessed with carnosauruses. It's underrated, IMHO anyway.
