Is dance a sport?

Uh no sweetie that wasn't a "bash". And yes it is my opinion, so leave it be. Nobody said you had to follow it; I never said it was my way or the highway. Just like I don't need to follow your thoughts on the matter.
Between "is cheerleading a sport" and "is dance a sport" I have seen so many times in the past 3 years it's nauseating. You ask for other peoples' opinions, you're gonna get them. Just because I don't agree doesn't mean you can get an attitude. And I don't understand how that would be offensive to you. Nowhere in my post did I quote you.

Well the thread topic was mine so, It looked like you were aiming it towards me.
Sorry.

My deepest apologies.

I'm a dancer, and I think dance is a sport. Dance is something wehere you use physical energy to compete and there is a likelihood of getting injured. It also is something that keeps you fit. I believe that dance is a sport 100%.

Really?
I'd really love to see you do a pirrouette three times, a perfect leap, make your leg do a circle, and the splits without stopping or faltering once in a competition in tights and pedinis and be perfectly sharp each time and keep your toes pointed. We have to do all these and more. We train for hours (5 days a week, 4 hours at a time) and yes it costs a lot, but do you know how many competitions we have to go to in one year span? Do you know how far away those things are?
So do you really wanna take a bet that gymnasts work harder than us?

I think that we are both equal meaning gymnastics and dance i will tell you i am a humungous fan of gymnastics as a spectator but prefer to dance and i not as big as a spectator dance fan. also when you mean make your leg do a circle do you mean do a rondujon(sp?) also I do agree we train lots I compete out of state once a month between now and july. I also train 6 days a week and 4 hours each day so i think that dance is a sport also ice skating is a sport why do they have it at the Olympics??

yes i do consider gymnastics a sport because its dance on steryoids and those gymnists work harder than dancers do i bet.

figure skating is an art

Dance is all about the bank...if you have bank your chances of making it big are greater than if you have little to no bank

Dance on sterioids?! Are you freaking kidding me? Gymnasts and dancers work equally as hard. There's so many differences between what gymnasts do, and what we dancers do. Your attitude very much bothers me.

Dance costs money, yeah. And so does gymnastics. It's because we're all both dedicated and want to learn and improve as much as we can. It doesn't matter how much money you have, it's how talented you are.

You are disgustingly ignorant.

::yes:: Very much so.

Actually I was reading a article about a hour ago on WOGA(World Olympic Gymnastics Academy) and it says that it cost over $30,000 a year to be a elite and dancers do train very hard just ask any dancer do you think fan kicks are easy or the splits or just a simple kick, or a leap that has to be in perfect splits in the air or a triple piraoute(sp?) if so i would like to see you do one

Amen girls! :) Way to represent. Haha.
(Allie, though I agree with everything you said. Gymnasts and dancers work equally as hard in my opinion.)

Yes. It is a sport.
Dance has all the elements of a sport: physical endurance, coordination, practice, discipline, and even, competition.

For all of those who said it isn't a sport I seriously want a reason why. :confused3

Well I think what you tried to say there was that dancers are on steroids and gymnasts work harder than we do? Also that if you are loaded, you will be a better dancer, and ice skating is an art.

1. Never heard of a dancer on steroids. Baseball players, football players, sure. Dancers, no. Why would we want to be muscular? We want long, slender lines, not bulky muscles.
2. It may help to have a lot of money to buy the fanciest costumes and the best training 7 days a week with a private instructor and go to competitions and workshops all over the place. But is is necessary? no. Also, on the same topic, I believe that a bunch of parents started a thread on the CB maybe. They were parents of figure skaters... One topic that kept coming up? The enormous costs involved. Same thing, they have costumes, tights, shoes, hair & makeup, training, competition fees, etc.
3. Let's go over performing arts. Last time I checked dance was one of them.

I think what she means is that gymnastics is dance on steroids like... gymnastics is bigger and better than dance. Because a person on steroids is going to be bigger and better at a sport then a person not on steroids.

Not that that makes any sense either. But thanks for clarifying.

its judged so i say no its not a sport[/QUote

You stated that it is judged so it is not a sport..what about all the snow boarding, figure skating, gymnastics..etc that are in the Olympics. Just because one person does not get to the end of a finish line does not mean it is not a sport. My neice has been a competitive dancer for 13 years and many of her best Tap performances we done in some jeans and a white button down shirt..it is not all about the costume..you can put on the shiniest costume but if you can't dance people know it. And to the young lady that started this thread it just sounds to me as though you WANTED to be a competitive dancer but just couldn't cut it. It is always like some people to rain on other people parade. I know how much training and practice the girls at her studio put in and I am certain that there aren't many sports with the same level of commitment and drive.

Thank you its not all about the bank and well yes my studio prefers the nice expensive oufits thats not what its all about if you have the talent you can do it not all competitive dancers travel far and all Addictedtospeed is focusing on is the cost involved if you wanted to be a dancer or something and it was too expensive and thats where your getting the cost idea from i'm sorry but there is always a solution for something you really want if you got the skill

Oops. I wrote the wrong thing. I think ti is a rondujon. Our teachers don't call them by their real names.

Typo

Dance, Gymnastics and Figure Skating are all sports in my eyes. I've have done all 3 competitivly for years, and they all require the same amount of physical ability indurance and practice as any other sport. And honestly, they were far more physically strenuous to me than rep soccer and hockey ((yes I have done manyyyyy sports in rep leagues lol)) Of course to make it and have proper training you shell out big money, but in what sport do you not do that? its the same thing as my brother paying thousands of dollars to be on a rep hockey team and have personal training.

Oops. I wrote the wrong thing. I think ti is a rondujon. Our teachers don't call them by their real names.

Well that isn't very good training. Not to attack on your studio or anything. Please don't take it that way.

In any case I still want to hear why people don't consider it a sport. I think the people who think it is a sport have built up a really good case and I still don't understand why people would think it isn't a sport.

Lots of studios have different names for things. Like my friend dances one place where they teach toe touches from the ground, and call them Russians. My old studio taught them more like cheerleading, and we know them as toe touches. "Second position leaps" and "side strattles" are the same. And "leap" "grand jete" .. call them whatever you want.

Oh okay, my apologizes :)

Not to attack your studio or your training Allie, but I have to agree :( Sorry!
Don't worry you two! I've said that at least 1,000 times!

I dont know where you guys are getting the fact that i think dance is easy, ive never said anything about it being easy.

You are disgustingly ignorant.

why because you dont agree with my opinon?

Really?

Again i dont know where you guys are getting the whole thing about how i think dance is easy.

Yes i do think gymnasts work harder, they do everything that a dancer does except the syncranization(sp). Yes i do realize that syncranizing 10+ dancers is not an easy task but, correct me if im wrong, i dont think there is a judge for every single dancer. When your a gymnnast you have, i think you have more than just one judge judging you. So my point is is that the judges wont catch every mistake you make unlike when your a gymnast. (thats just what i think)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGF-vH8G6jc - gymnast video
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4LVI5I8cYvE&feature=related - dance video

from these two videos, to me it seems that the crowd cheered the most when the team was syncronizing some fast hand/leg movements not when a person did a spectacular trick.

So is dance just a sport about syncronizing a routine?

And about the money thing im more refurring to the african american culture and basketball. You get these african kids that most likely dont have the best parents and not in the greatest life but they play basketball and get good at so raise themselves out of the "slumps" (I know that this is very steryotipical and i do know that all african american kids do not live in the "slumps" and have bad parents, do drugs, get in trouble...)

Umm wow! if you would re-read my post i said that gymnastics is dance (not dancers) on steriods. I never once said that dancers were on steriods. I also said that if you have the money your chance at making it big is more likely to happen. And ice skating is an art, just like dance (Just because its an art, doesnt mean its a sport)

Like i said before you chance is greater to make it big

What really makes me laugh is that yall are trying to prove my opinon wrong :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Understandable but there is a different between calling something a "leg circle" and a Rond de jambe. Or between a "spin" and a pirouette.

why because you dont agree with my opinon?

No because you don't know what you're talking about and you made an ignorant, stereotypical comment. Have an opinion all you want but don't say things that aren't true to back your opinion. I'd suggest doing research before making accusations like you did.

Yes i do think gymnasts work harder, they do everything that a dancer does except the syncranization(sp). Um, dancers compete with solos too. So yes 5+ judges can watch ONE dancer.

And about the money thing im more refurring to the african american culture and basketball. Here is your ignorance and stereotyping shining though again. I'm glad you think only "African Americans" come from the slums and need to "make it."

Like i said before you chance is greater to make it big

And no this is also not true. It is VERY difficult to make it anywhere in any performing art. Companies that want to hire you don't give a crap how much money you have.

Don't worry you two! I've said that at least 1,000 times!

Oh okay lol. I didn't want to offend you :)

It's not syncronizing a routine. It's about bringing something special to a performance.

Ballet-Grace.
Tap/Jazz/HipHop-Energy.
Modern/Lyrical-Emotion.

To get a good performance you need to bring something extra to a dance to make it...a worthy dance.

How do you think that gymnast got so good?! HOURS upon HOURS of practice. We practice just as much as them. The difference is while they're just one person focusing on winning we're one big team trying to win for EVERYONE. Therefore it's harder for us all to be together and work.

Yeah, dance is a crazy committment. I thought I was way committed to football. When i watched the video of some of their competitions at my girlfriend's i was amazed by the complexity of everything. I think it's hard to remember my plays then execute them. The things done in dance are mind blowing. She's attempted to teach me some of the names of this stuff, and I end up way confused. It's an incredible committment.
