Is dance a sport?

Dancing for "fun" in dance classes - not a sport.
Dancing in dance competitions - absolutely a sport.

I'm quite annoyed at the fact that you think dance competitions are based off of costumes! That's crazy, the groups that take 1st place win because of their talent and skill. We work LONG, HARD HOURS to perfect what we do. Just like a football player has two-a-days, we have 6 1/2 hour long rehersals. It takes a lot of commitment, strength, and willpower to be a dancer. We are athletes, we need to be in tiptop healthy condition to succeed. Dancing is a sport :)

Do you consider gymnastics a sport? They are judged. So is ice skating.
You also need to consider the type of dance. You can compete as a team, with a school, by yourself as a soloist. There's plenty.

Here are some amazing college and high school dance teams, at Nationals:

We've had this thread at least 10 times, so I won't post my opinion again.

Excuse me but was that a bash?

It was just a simple question.

A thread at least 10 times?

It hasn't been since I have been here and I have been here for almost a year now.

You have probably been here longer but STILL.

Just because that's your opinion doesn't mean I have to follow it.

Well, I haven't seen it 10, but it's realistic enough to say I've seen it posted 4 or 5 other times.

My apologies

I still don't feel that Dance is a sport. (Its just my opinion)

I'm not sure.
I dance. I consider it a hobbie really.

Uh no sweetie that wasn't a "bash". And yes it is my opinion, so leave it be. Nobody said you had to follow it; I never said it was my way or the highway. Just like I don't need to follow your thoughts on the matter.
Between "is cheerleading a sport" and "is dance a sport" I have seen so many times in the past 3 years it's nauseating. You ask for other peoples' opinions, you're gonna get them. Just because I don't agree doesn't mean you can get an attitude. And I don't understand how that would be offensive to you. Nowhere in my post did I quote you.

So is gymnastics and Ice skating and there sports I say yes it is as a dancer I do know it is as the saying goes If dance was easy it would be called football also the expense part is very expensive we spend about a $120 on each costume and on top of that my tution fees are VERY expensive aka we spend $40 a day for my dance lessons and currently i dance 6 days a week so we spend over almost a thousand a month on dance lessons but then you have to remember i want to be the best there ever is I train so hard then on that i will omit the competiton fees and travel fees are very expensive but all and all its worth it for me dance isnt for everyone but if you want it you can always find a way to get and thats what ive done i will say with everything else we have barely any money left after paying all our bills for my brothers fees for the sports he does and with fees that pop up its hard but we make it through and thats what we have to do so i can be the best and go to inernational comps to be the best

yes i do consider gymnastics a sport because its dance on steryoids and those gymnists work harder than dancers do i bet.

figure skating is an art

Dance is all about the bank...if you have bank your chances of making it big are greater than if you have little to no bank

Well this question has popped up multiple times in arguments between me and my friends. I would like to know your opinion.

Is dance a sport?

I say it isn't. I mean yes it takes ability but I don't believe it has the potential to be called a sport. Half the time, you are judged by the costumes you are wearing instead of how much skill is involved. In fact i feel extremely bad because my friend wanted to be a competitive dancer because she was good, but didn't have the money for the dumb costumes that dancers are judged on. All she had was her ballet slippers a leotard some tights and some other dance shoes.

I think dancing has become ridiculous because its more of a "I spend millions of dollars each year Buying trophies and paying for dance lessons" instead of pure talent.

What do you think?

Discuss

HECK YES! Dance is a sport. Do you think cheerleading is a sport? Same thing! I am a very competitive irish dancer, and it sure is a sport, believe me!!!!!!! We have 2 practice like 5 days a week, practice at home, condition/exercise and everything. We take it very seriously. We are dancers! GO DANCERS! BOO TO THE YA!

Actually I was reading a article about a hour ago on WOGA(World Olympic Gymnastics Academy) and it says that it cost over $30,000 a year to be a elite and dancers do train very hard just ask any dancer do you think fan kicks are easy or the splits or just a simple kick, or a leap that has to be in perfect splits in the air or a triple piraoute(sp?) if so i would like to see you do one

You are disgustingly ignorant.

Really?
I'd really love to see you do a pirrouette three times, a perfect leap, make your leg do a circle, and the splits without stopping or faltering once in a competition in tights and pedinis and be perfectly sharp each time and keep your toes pointed. We have to do all these and more. We train for hours (5 days a week, 4 hours at a time) and yes it costs a lot, but do you know how many competitions we have to go to in one year span? Do you know how far away those things are?
So do you really wanna take a bet that gymnasts work harder than us?

I think it's a sport, definitely. I used to be a dancer, and I still dance in theater. But I know from watching people dance in competitions and knowing how much talent, practice you put into it, and energy you need to have that it is a sport.
