We have had good & not so good experiences there. You will find opinions all over the place on these boards. Basically, you just have to try it and form your own opinion.
I will say that the worst experience we had was on a Friday night with an 8:00 ADR. It took forever, the food was not great, and we just found ourselves ready to leave very quickly.
When I went in 2008 for dinner with my family, we had a great time and really enjoyed it. It wasnt the best meal, but it was still good and the characters were great. I took my son back in 2010 and was disappointed. I feel like it went down in quality. However the character interaction was still worth it for my son as he loved getting one on one time with each character and not having to wait in a line to do so. As much as I feel like its hit or miss, I am planning to take my son back for our september trip, but for breakfast instead of dinner.
We always do a ton of character meals and honestly, this is our least favorite and will most likely never do it again. Some people love it though.
You can see almost the same characters at Donald's Safari Breakfast in AK and it's MUCH better. Better food, better atmosphere, and didn't feel as rushed with the characters compared to CM
I also beleive hit or miss. We usually only do breakfast now as the dinner prices have just gotten too extreme. For a long time it was a "must do" as our kids loved it. However they are now 14 and 17 and like it more for the memories than the characters or food. I would definately say it is something everyone should try at least once. Enjoy your trip.
It's on our ADR list for breakfast. We've always seen it from the monorail and it did look like a zoo, but the girls begged to go this time. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is a pleasant experience.
The question really should be "Is it as bad as people say it is?" The answer to that question is Yes! It is as BAD as people say it is... The Characters are ok... The food is inedible.
Who said it was good???? No really the food is generally not good at all. The service is indifferent. The characters move from table to table very quickly. Waits to check in and for your table can be long. We stopped going after many visits after it got progressively dirtier each visit--lots of food on the floor, kids hands in buffet food and not changed out, etc.
Depends on what you are used to. I don't ever get to do fine dining and I'm by no means the gourmet type so yes, I think the food is good! And it's our favorite character meal. We always schedule it for dinner the night we arrive to kick off our trip and see the characters right away!
I find the food to be "acceptable" in that it's buffet food. I see no difference in quality of food at any of the character buffets we've been to (Chef Mickey's, 1900 Park Fair, Cyrstal Palace).
I think they are overpriced and if you aren't on the dining plan you need to really consider whether you want to pay that much for mediocre food just to see characters. Again, I find this true of all of the buffets I've been to.
When my kids were young, we liked doing it. This past trip (#4), it started to wear off. Now that my kids are older, we won't bother with it. But it is a memorable experience the first time.
We have eaten both breakfast and dinner there and even though breakfast was much better than dinner, we still did not care for this character meal. We are a family that loves to do many character meals each trip and this one is by far our least favorite. The characters always seem so rushed compared to places like Cape May Cafe or Crystal Palace. However, if it is something that you would like to try because you have never done before, then by all means go for it, it is worth doing at least once.
We used to always do a breakfast and a dinner during our trips at Chef Mickey's and the last three years the food and service just plain scary so we have not been back since September 2008 and our not planing on it anytime soon. to many other good character places to go with good food and service.
Well, seeing as you are a 10 year old, I bet you will love it. What's better than spinning napkins with Mickey?
I personally wouldn't go there again. The first time it was noisy, dirty, the food was almost inedible and we have to make a real stink out of ourselves to get Donald to come to our table..he had somehow passd us by and we had to ask 4 times over a 45 minute period before he showed up.
So, with so many people loving the place, I figured it was just a bad night...wrong. The second time was just as bad....so we'll skip Chef Mickey. We do love Cape May and Tusker House!
I like breakfast with Minnie, Goofy, and Donald at Cape May in the Beach Club resort, or for dinner with Mickey, Chip & Dale...go for the garden grille in Epcot.
If you are trying to get to Cape May from your resort. Take a bus to DHS, and take a boat to the Beach Club...unless you are already staying at Y&BC/BWI/BWV/S&D.
Is it the best food I've ever eaten? No... but it's not half bad either. We had a late breakfast ADR (11:10am), and the food was warm and fresh and very tasty. There was lots of variety, and I probably could have had a million Mickey waffles if my stomach could have handled it. Service was good, it was a buffet, so it's hard to judge, but she refilled out drinks and took away our plates and was very polite and nice. Great character interactions, and we never felt rushed, even though when we left there was only our section filled as they were then closed until supper.
