The way I see it, China has a similar government to Cuba's, yet we openly trade with China, support their leaders, and don't interfere with their way of government. What's the difference? How can Cuban-Americans act so disgusted with Castro while they go out and spend their money on Chinese TV's and computers? Either you abhor repressive regimes, or you support them.

I've held this sentiment for years. I also try to avoid buying products made in China, although it seems that sometimes there just isn't a choice. (And I have no problem spending more for US or Canadian made goods when I can!)

I'm not convinced that the man is "fine" by any means. And while I would never wish death to him, I do believe that there is change in the wind...

Canadians vacation in Cuba. Some U.S. citizens vacation there via Canada or did until Bush tightened restrictions.

I don't think he's dead, yet, but does it matter? If his brother takes over, won't that be the same thing?

It's still plenty easy for US citizens to get to Cuba via Costa Rica and Brasil.

It isn't a big deal. If she asks the mods to close it and IF they do, a new thread can be opened. This isn't even the first thread on Castro dying.

But I do think the whole Elian business is another subject. But there's a headline and picture for you if the borders were opened! He'd be on the front page of every newspaper and a millionaire in about a week.

Thanks for pointing out the limitations of censorship...and the fact that the raw sore Janet Reno left on southern Florida is still alive and well!

Are there any electronics that are still made in the US? So, if you buy a product that's made in China, when there are no other choices, you're supporting communism?

What happens in China doesn't affect Cubans directly, just like what happens in Cuba doesn't affect the Chinese people. Cubans abhor Castro because of what he and his regime have done to them, their families and their country.

Sigh....I guess "intelligent" conversations on current events -- in the supposed interest of not ruffling feathers -- don't include acknowledging history. Yep, the current emotional environment in little Havana -- and the potential repercussions of political change in Cuba -- have absolutely nothing to do with the Camarioca or Mariel boatlifts, or Elian Gonzalez, or the Bay of Pigs.....mention these irrelevant, inflammatory subjects at your own risk!!

That's not the case at all. Discussing the history of relations and incidents with Cuba is one thing, but to post an inflammatory photo in an obvious attempt to incite a debate that should actually be on its own thread--not because it's not at all relevant, but because it will take over this thread--is another.
