With all the other entertainment sources, is card playing becoming a lost past time?

When I was young, my parents would have card parties.

I knew how to play many games by the time I was my older son's age (9).

Anytime our extended family got together we would play "nickel dime" poker.

The reason I bring this up was yesterday my younger son and I were searching for something and we came upon our cribbage board and he asked what it was for.

The 14 year old Muggette and I play Russian bank (a two-deck advanced solitaire variation) several times a week. We probably spend as much time together doing that as we do on our Wii.

Speaking strictly as a parent, I love playing cards with her because it helps to teach logic and planning. In addition, since each game takes a minimum of 15-20 minutes to play I find it's great way to continue to have all sorts of conversations with my teenaged daughter without them being the least bit forced.

More often than not, she's the one asking me if I want to play, and unless I'm ridiculously busy I make sure I say yes. Some of my best parenting gets done these days within the context of those games.

Heck no... if you do digging you will see that many games are played and that is in addition to Texas Hold Um.
I think it has grown since you can do it online.

Now in my own home we don't play because no one wants  to ....;) however.....

My sis, brother, father's we play...and we play to win.:lmao: I don't know what game they are playing now but for a few years it has been Euchre.

My dad goes to bridge tournaments, plays online and he even plays as partners for older folks in tournaments.

I am moving back home and I need to brush up my skills so I can whip my sister's behind.:rolleyes1

I love card games. I started playing pinochle by the age of 5. A few years later I could hold my own against the adults. I love to play cards.

I will be playing cards later today after Easter dinner.

The teens are now playing too. So cards are not a lost art in our family.

We play Rummy sometimes, and Uno frequently. We also play board games (Parcheesi, Sorry, Sequence, etc.) at least several times a week.

I used to play cribbage and euchre with my father all the time. Now I can't find anyone who knows how to play.

Not in my family! My earliest memories was watching all the grownups play poker and rum (for money)... now I get to play!

we love cards in our house.

When I was a teenager, I always had a deck of cards in my pocket, ready to play.

I met DH in the Dorms, we played spades together.

Our kids love poker. DS6 is a heck of a bluffer.

When I was growing up in Michigan, everybody played euchre all the time. Even in school.

When I got married and my ex was in the military, spades was the game that everyone played.

When I moved back to Michigan, I was tickled to discover that there are still lots of euchre games at parties and I still remember how to play.

My dd and I play gin, spades, and a wide variety of board games. She's 17 and I'll drop everything if she asks me to play a game or play cards with her. :thumbsup2

DS 10 and I play cards all the time. Now he's on a chess kick though. He has a Wii and PS2, DS etc...but just 5 minutes ago he was begging me to play chess before we leave for my mom's house.

We still play cards around here and I am anxiously awaiting my kids getting older so we can play more advanced games than Uno and Go Fish. I love to play games and I have very fond memories of playing games with my parents. We just recently decided to do a Family Movie Night once a week and I have been thinking we need to have a Family Game Night as well. :)

Sheepshead was a huge game in Wisonsin. It's kind of like euchre. There were games in nearly every lunchroom, and family games that had gone on for generations. It seems like that's all gone now.

You can play sheepshead online, so the internet's probably keeping it alive. But I doubt anybody new is taking up the game, so it'll die out before too long.

:lmao:

Sheepshead huh? We are always looking for a new game. They are playing a new game they got from my uncle in CA when he came to visit. I forget the name of it.

fevery family get together we play euchre ro sheepshead. we always make sure we bring our cribbage board on every vacation.

That's another one I need to teach them.

When I looked it up it had many different versions. You know, I was doing some outside research.:rolleyes1

My sister who always beats everyone, has not felt the full power of my card playing.

Growing up in northern wisconsin, we used to play cribbage, penny poker, and smear.

In fact, we used playing cribbage to help our DD's with math when they were little!

I grew up playing Spades with my parents, but haven't played with years and have forgotten how to play. Now when I see my mom we play 31, which is simple and we enjoy it. My 8yo likes playing it, also. My mom also enjoys playing dominoes. Have taught my kids chicken feet which they enjoy.

Sheepshead is big with my mom's side of the family in northern Wisconsin. When I was younger I used to sit at the table and watch the adults play. I've been trying to learn it, but since we don't get together very much, I forget what I've learned from the last time we played it.
I got a book about how to play Sheepshead for Christmas, so hopefully I can finally learn it.

We play a lot of cribbage in my family as well. My mom and I used to play double solitaire a lot, and we also play Kings-in-the-corners quite a bit, especially when we are camping.

Poker seems to be pretty big with high school and college-aged people.

We play euchre at family functions. My 8 and 10 year olds have recently learned to play, too. My dad's family used to play spades and gin. My mom's family played euchre and bridge. DH and I played hearts for awhile, but euchre is the mianstay and has been since college.
