Is August really that bad?

Face of the sun hot. We won't do August again.

We won't either. i am from CT and I am okay in the heat and humidity, but the last August trip did me in.

I am not sure how bad missing school is for your middle school. The way I see it is they won't be able to miss much of high school because it is much harder to catch up. If you have to pull her out, I would do it. In the end, middle school just amounts to time in school. Once they hit high school, your time with her will be limited and a short 4 years until they start their life.

.

4 years ago we took my DGD out of middle school. DD used to take her out for a week and she had been fine, making up the work and not falling behind the class. That time was not a good idea for her. She struggled for quite some time after that and then got sick, so more time lost. SHe was very stressed, so while we enjoyed the trip, we really did regret that she missed school.

I don't know what is best for any other family, and sure don't know how any individual child will manage losing a week or so in middle school, but in many areas for many kids, it is not just time in school. I am so glad that we were able to vacation with her when she was younger becuas ethere is no missing school for this kid any more, but looking back, I know DD and DSIL woudl probably make a different decision, as would my DGD.

We only have 2 more years before she is off to college, and I miss her already!

We visited the last week in August last year, and loved it! The heat and humidity was no worse than it was here in my area (South Jersey), but we did have to contend with a few storms here and there due to Hermine. Other than that, the crowds were great and we saw and did everything we wanted. I'd definitely go back again in late August. It was just hard waiting all summer to go on vacation and then right back to school the next week!

We've gone in August several times (the last was three and a half years ago). It was hot and humid, but we were ok. My husband and daughter had a little more trouble with the heat than I did. But we thought it was pretty crowded, so it's interesting to hear so many people say that the crowds are low. We did go earlier in the month, though...like 10th-22nd. Maybe that makes a difference.

Yes, the last week is less crowded. Many kids are back in school by then.

We have done late August into Labor Day 2 years in a row. In 2016, it was not quite as hot, but was very rainy. Best thing about this time is that the crowds are very low. We scheduled early mornings and evenings in the parks, with mid day breaks at the pool. I did not schedule any outdoor activities mid-day (parades, outdoor shows). We powered through the rain with ponchos and umbrellas - the rain actually cooled things off and thinned the crowds.
Also...I would advise you to go in with a good plan. You don't want to wait on long outdoor lines.
We had a great time, and made fantastic memories despite the heat and the rain. The only downside for me, personally, is that I didn't want to stroll around and take my time enjoying the scenery. We moved quickly from one attraction to the next to stay out of the heat. Other than that, I thought it was manageable and would definitely go back in August.
Happy Planning! :)
