Is anyone really excited about Avatar Land?

I know the movie has fans and was more than a financial success but is that fan base big enough to warrant a new land? I am sure it will do well in the beginning as most of us would love to see any new attractions but I am afraid after a while it will seem dated like The Great Movie Ride. It doesn’t seem to have the fan base and staying power of a Star Wars or Harry Potter and has yet to prove itself as powerful franchise.
I am not excited. Not even a little. I guess it's better than nothing but Avatar wasn't my cup of tea.

I can imagine that Avatarland is the perfect example of "the Emperor wears no clothes" syndrome. I imagine that there's some shot with Disney, probably Iger, that fell in love with the idea and the kiss-up, yes-men underlings are too afraid to tell him what a stupid idea it is.

I'm really looking forward to the land, because the visual elements from the movie should make for an amazing immersive experience. Also, the conservation theme fits really well with the overall message of AK. Avatar for me was like so many James Cameron movies, beautiful world, poorly written screenplay. I found the actual story uninspired and unexciting, but I cannot deny that the visual world was stunning. So if the new land focuses on the visual world and the conservation focus, then I think it could be incredibly successful.

You've watched the Disney planning video way too many times, because they use the words immersive experience at least 5 maybe 6 times.

Perhaps that's a tad too cynical. The last two major projects that Disney completed on U.S. soil were Cars Land and the Fantasyland expansion. With or without the planning video, one could conclude that both of those resulted in immersive experiences. Add to that the really cool technological stuff that Disney Overseas is getting, and there is every reason to believe that the Avatar project will be pretty amazing. And all of that is independent of the plot of the movie or where one comes out on the message of the film. (Which, by the way, is not likely to be repeated in the sequels).

LOL! I was going to use the same phrase in my last post in this thread but talked myself out of it at the last second for this very reason.

Wow, what an imagination. You sure are imagining a lot there. And here I thought that James Cameron and the Imagineers were doing the real imagining. I stand corrected.

I imagine that I'll check out the land when it opens, and actually judge it based on its merits -- instead of judging it years before it opens, on the cynical assumption that it must be a bad idea.

But that's just me. I'm crazy that way.

I'm far more worried about the bean counters keeping the imangineers from realizing their visions than whether or not a visually stunning blockbuster with many different vistas ripe for attractions deserves its own land. Cameron is at heart a superlative production designer and if they allow his designs to come to life, the land will be a big success.

I have to agree. The bean counters are always the biggest threat to a fully realized new attraction or land. As I said earlier in this thread, I hope Disney is going all out to create something great, like they did with Cars Land. And considering their multi-billion dollar profits, anything less would just mean short changing their fans.

The only thing Avatarland that will do a thing for me is it will hopefully draw other people into that section so that I have a smaller crowd to deal with as I navigate my favorite park.

Not picking on you here. This was just the most recent post of its ilk, so I figure I'll use it. There are a number of people who have voiced the sentiment that they will not visit the Avatar attractions, but are happy that others will do so and thus redistribute the crowd. Honest, sincere question here--(had to say that because sometimes written posts come off differently than they were intended): Are there any other attractions at WDW other than thrill rides that people have never done and will never do? Will all of the people who have posted here that they are not the least bit interested in Avatar or who think it was a bad decision by Disney never, ever visit that area? I can't think of any ride at WDW other than roller coasters, motion simulators and Tower of Terror that repeat visitors have never done, will never do, and will avoid at all costs based purely on the theming and/or the franchise that was the basis for the attraction. But based on the opinions on this thread, the disdain for Avatar runs over 50%. I'm having a hard time believing that when the area opens, less than half of the people who go through the turnstiles at AK will actually venture over to Avatar Land. :confused3 My understanding is that the main Avatar attraction will be a technological update over the Soarin' concept, and Soarin' is one of the most popular rides at WDW. Will the majority of people who love Soarin' skip Avatar Land because they "aren't interested"?

In all my visits to WDW I've only done HM once and POTC once. I love that others flock there. I also try to skip JC & PP. again - many love them and I am glad. I also avoid Ellen, but can't say others call that a must do.

I've also skipped stuff at DHS I don't even know the names of. Stuff with Drew Carey (?) and American Idol...

Yeah - there's a bunch I don't love.

But have you done these things at least once? I probably haven't been in the HoP since 1977. But I can at least say that I tried it. I honestly can't think of a single thing that I have never tried once based on the assumption that it wouldn't interest me. But I can think of lots of things that I no longer do because I lost interest.

LOL. Actually. I went on POTC & HM one trip b/c I was pregnant and was still allowed on those things. Id been there many times before and since and always walked past. That trip also had me with a group id never before (nor since) travelled with and I was playing nice.

I acquiesce to PP now for my kids. But I don't like that movie and always avoided.

And I'm not saying I'd never walk thru. But I'll love that others may flock there.

I think that most people are at least going to walk through and give it a try - no matter what they say on a message board. But there are some people who are very upset at Disney's choice in Avatar, and this is their only chance to vent, so they vent.

Are the only people that go on Tower of Terror Twilight Zone fans? Do Country Music lovers stay away from the Aerosmith coaster? It's just a theme for an area, you don't have to love the movie to appreciate it. It's all about the magic of making you feel you're in another world. Did someone say "immersive experience"?

Yes and no. I thought the movie was completely overrated and I didn't understand the hype. That movie also came out how many years ago? Is there a new movie or something? I don't understand why years after they are building this new land when people stopped talking about it years ago.

However, Disney Imagineers are amazing and the movie had beautiful exotic lands. I think most people are excited for anything new Disney does, especially a new land. I'm pretty sure Disney will pull through and come out with a stunning new land, based on a stupid movie or not.

I am really excited about it and the other changes they are making at AK. I could live without the county fair section of Dino-Land USA though.
