I think Avatar land will be a great visual experience and I will check it out, I would not book a special trip to just see it. To me this is the key to whole Avatar debate. Disney went with the whole Avatar thing as a response to Universal and Harry Potter. Like some people have said Avatar does not have the same following as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel and others period. Box office receipts alone do not prove that Avatar has a huge following. This to me is where Disney is going to have some issues –

When a film is highly exploitable as a commercial property, its ancillary revenues can dwarf its income from direct film sales.
[5] The Lion King earned over $2 billion in box-office and home video sales,
[6] but this pales in comparison to the $6 billion earned at box offices around the world by
the stage adaptation.
[7] Merchandising can be extremely lucrative too:
The Lion King also sold $3 billion of merchandise,
[8] while Pixar's
Cars—which earned $462 million in theatrical revenues and was only a modest hit by comparison to other
Pixar films[9]—generated global merchandise sales of over $8 billion in the five years after its 2006 release.
[10][11] Pixar also had another huge hit with
Toy Story 3, which generated almost $10 billion in merchandise retail sales in addition to the $1 billion it earned at the box office.

How much did Avatar Merchandise make from the movie? Are people going to buy a ton of stuff from Avatar land? Not only has Harry Potter drawn people to Universal parks, it sells a ton of merchandise. I was just there a few weeks ago and spent a lot money on Harry Potter stuff. I live about 10 mins away from
Disneyland and we took a trip to Orlando because my wife loves Harry Potter and now my daughter is really getting into it. Just to show how big Harry Potter really is. My daughter is even in a Harry Potter summer school reading program. I would bet there are other schools that offer something similar out there but I doubt there are too many Avatar summer school programs.
