Is anyone following the Karen Read trial?

I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this one here because it's all over the news. I'd heard of it, but didn't know the whole sort of "scoop" until we recently watched the five part series on Max, "A Body in the Snow". So now I'm following the retrial. Wondering if anyone is following along and has opinions either way. Personally, I think there's far too much reasonable doubt to convict her on anything other than a DUI. Anyway, maybe there isn't enough interest for a discussion, but thought I'd throw it out there.

I’ve been watching it. Obviously tragic to see a life lost but I find almost all of the ‘participants’ a pretty unlikeable bunch. A complete circus. Not a great advert for that community 😳

I know, it's pretty crazy all-around. I'm not sure there's a conspiracy here, but this is one immeshed group of people. It's like the entire town got together to line up their stories. Also, do not drive in Canton Massachusetts after roughly 9pm, because everyone is hammered and behind the wheel. Just insane.

I used to live very close to Canton (one town over) and you are not wrong. I honestly think there is some sort of cover up going on with this one.

What mystifies me is that even more minor witnesses, like the EMT yesterday lied in the first trial, or omitted a lot of information regarding their relationships with the Albert family. In the first trial she said..."I went to high school with someone named Caitlin Albert". But this time around, the defense got her to admit that at a very minimum, that she and Albert were in overlapping friend groups. They'd been at parties together, took an overnight trip with friend group together, at baby showers together....in many photos together. That's far different from "I went to high school with someone...."

Every witness is working very hard to minimize their ties to that family.

I think she did it. His bar glass was under him, same one you can see him holding as he left the bar and got in the car with. I don't think they planted the tail light pieces. And there was zero dog dna on him. She hit him and drove away. She knew it broke the tail light so she purposely backed into his truck on camera to have an excuse. She is a very scary lady. I think even she believes the story they are telling and she is eating up the infamy (attention and fans and being on TV, all of that). I think she will get away with it though because she has THE best defense attorney. If I ever needed one, I'd be ringing his number for sure.

I will just say knowing what I know about Canton and that area I think it is definitely possible that she did not do it and that things may have been planted.

There are signs all over the place to free Karen Read, the locals seem to be on her side and that tells me something about how things work in a place.

I watched Netflix's How to fix a Drug Scandal about how Massachusetts manages a very important subject and that sort of put things in focus for me ahead of this story. I would suggest watching it for a glimpse behind the curtain, to say it was eye opening is an understatement.

I am looking to see where to watch it today and can't find anything, I have Hulu and am local to Boston News so I feel like I should be able to find it live.

My gut says that she hit him as well, but....I don't think she knew that she hit him. I think she was very drunk, made a zillion lunatic calls to him on the way back to his house, then woke up in a panic when he wasn't home. I think this group are big, big drinkers...like black out drinkers who can also function on some level.

But I think there's so much reasonable doubt that they can't convict her. There's a ton of very odd maneuvers by a lot of people involved.

There’s no doubt that she was drunk. The whole cast is a bunch of nasty characters, including Karen. Watched the series and couldn’t stand her from the beginning. But tried to watch with an open mind. It’s sad to me that there is very little focus on the victim.

Agree.

DUI with involuntary manslaughter.

That's the "most likely" scenario by far with current evidence.

It does look like they got them a little soap opera vibe there in Canton.

Yup, that's what I think happened. They played the voicemails today from Karen to John on her way back to his house and they are just brutal. She comes across as a raging drunk. Keep in mind, I think that this whole crew are big, big drinkers....many are driving while drunk, etc. But I do not think she knew that she hit him.

One of the biggest things that I find *very* suspect is that the homeowner and former Boston Police Sergeant Brian Albert, who had recently retired....did not come out of his house when all of this was unfolding on his front lawn. I don't trust Jen McCabe's account of them being asleep as this was all going down. I know it was windy outside, but their bedroom faced the front lawn. Unless the two of them had blackout shades and were passed out drunk themselves.....I can't imagine they didn't see the lights or hear the screaming of Karen Read and Kerry Roberts. Part of me wonders if Albert was concerned about liability. Perhaps concerned that police would think he allowed O'Keefe to leave his home that drunk and then got hit...etc.

However, we haven't gotten to Trooper Proctor yet, and once we get to him, a ton of reasonable doubt will enter the scene.

I think anyone in this Peyton Place could be passed out drunk at any time!lol

I agree. But she isn’t

I agree. But the fact is, if you’re testifying you only need to answer what they direct at you. In her situation, she never lied… she DID go to high school with her. It’s up to the defense to dig deeper than that. It definitely appears Karen Reed doesn’t have many fans in Canton, MA! But then again -she has a busted taillight and claimed out loud that she hit him to police. If she was set up, someone did a very good job.

I haven’t followed all along, but there have been claims that the victim sustained some injuries that wouldn’t seem to go along with being backed into -more like he was beaten up. I’m late to the party so if someone can confirm …that would tell me a lot. Unless of course she ran him over several times but I would think that would be fairly obvious to a coroner

True, that's a good point. But, it comes across as a little suspect when many of these witnesses have downplayed their relationships within that group of people.

Yes, the injuries are definitely odd. He had multiple skull fractures, and the injury to his arm that the Defense is going to try and say is a dog bite. The State's theory is she hit him while reversing at 26 miles an hour, presumably hit him in that arm...then the taillight shatters and rips his shirt and punctures/tears his arm. He then falls backward and slams his head into the ground. But...I believe they found him on his stomach. Perhaps he wasn't knocked out cold and tried to turn over and try to crawl away, and then passed out, and died from the head injury and hypothermia. That's the state's theory anyway.

I wonder how....if she hit him that hard in the arm and knocked him back, how are there no other broken bones, particularly that arm? It's puzzling for sure. But I've never heard that she ran over him multiple times. That would have broken bones for sure. I was pulled down by a big dog once in the winter. It was icy, and the ground was frozen solid. He pulled, and I held on to the leash, arm stretched out and went down on my right side. Just that impact with the ground cracked two ribs. I don't know how he has no other broken bones.

I have not followed. My dd asked this weekend if I followed. She thinks she is being framed. I am interested to know the story from the beginning.........

If you have Max, or maybe the ID channel, watch "A Body in the Snow". There's also a dateline on this story from last year. It's pretty much from Karen's perspective, but you'll get the low down on the case.

Thank you. Will search on Demand tomorrow. I have both. I watch ID all the time - 20/20/Dateline - it makes one not want to leave the house anymore or trust anyone :(.
